Why Bother the
Teacher Anymore?
While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,†they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?†Mark 5:35
It doesn’t seem likely that a verse saying your daughter is dead can have anything to do with marriage restoration. The beauty of God is that He can use anything to get His point across. While I have read this verse many times in the past - in fact it was one of the verses that God had given me to pray for my husband - today when I read it I saw it in another way.
If you are like me, when you started your stand you were married and then you began to beat on the gates of heaven in prayer and fasting. Have you found that you can relate to Jairus up to the point where he is so desperate he goes to find Jesus and gets his attention? Yes I believe we all can, but how can we relate to Jairus when others come to him and say your daughter is dead, why bother the teacher anymore? Aren’t we after all praying for a marriage?
Since my stand, not only have I endured the divorce but now also a non-covenant marriage. Your daughter is dead, read to me that your marriage is dead, why bother the teacher any more. At least God showed me how others in my life have spoken to me like some of the men in verse 35 spoke to Jairus. One friend believed with me and even went to my divorce proceeding, praying and believing only to find out that, after the divorce, it was final in her heart and even more so with the non-covenant.
Have you experienced a divorce or non- covenant relationship and have had others tell you, “Why bother, it’s finished, it’s over, there is no hope?†I don’t mean for this message to be one of grief but of hope. While I know what I see in the natural, I am more assured of what I don’t see in the supernatural. It always gets harder before the breakthrough and if you have gone through a divorce and/or non-covenant, verse 36 is our verse, our hope in the storm.
Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler (the synagogue ruler - that’s you so put your name there instead), “Don’t be afraid; just believe.†Mark 5:36
Jesus ignored what the others had said and we have to ignore them as well and ignore the circumstances. Jesus told you and me long before any divorce, long before any non-covenant, He was going to restore and a divorce or non-covenant has not changed that. It doesn’t matter how many people we know or knew who now think it can’t happen. It only matters that the promise is not based on evidence of the natural, but on God’s character. If you have allowed the circumstances of divorce and/or non-covenant to speak a different truth to you other than what God promised to you, it’s not too late to stand up, regroup and stand again.
Jairus, at the mention of his daughter dying, must have experienced an overwhelming amount of emotion. Just because it doesn’t say what he felt doesn’t mean he didn’t have the doubts and the questions that we have based on the circumstances. With getting the divorce papers or even going through the divorce, the news of a non-covenant marriage and then the non-covenant marriage actually happening, emotions in times like these are a stander’s worst enemy.
However in verse 37 we have our answer as to what Jairus did. Jairus didn’t rely on his thoughts or feelings but he kept walking, walking toward his house with Jesus to where his daughter was. You might have gotten news of a divorce and/or non-covenant, but keep walking. Don’t let “others†in your life tell you it can’t or won’t happen. You are on the path of restoration so don’t let others' opinions, observations or feelings change your path. Keep walking towards your healing, because one day, like in Mark 5:41, Jesus is going to take the hand of your spouse and speak to him or her and say, “Talitha koum! (which means, “Little girl I say to you, get up!â€)
Breakthrough is coming standers. It’s as sure as harvest and seed time, day and night. I am walking and I am going to keep walking. I can walk, I can take another step in the direction of restoration and you can too, one more day. This could be the last day!
