THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!
By Bibleman
This in-depth Bible study about the Holy Spirit will help us understand just how important this gift is in every believer’s life. This study will show what the Holy Spirit’s function is and how a Christian can receive this important gift from God. This study will also show how the Holy Spirit fulfills the role of sanctifier, teacher, comforter, guide, spiritual helper, revelator, confirmer, and reprover. Without the Holy Spirit no Christian can be sanctified or called and empowered by God to fulfill the will of God and be able to accomplish the work He has called them to do. The Holy Spirit also enables a Christian to be able to live a holy and righteous life that God desires, which he was unable to do before receiving the Holy Spirit. God desires to be able to come into the hearts of all believers through the indwelling of His Spirit. Without the indwelling Holy Spirit in the lives of believers they cannot do the works of Jesus such as healing the sick and casting out devils. Without the Holy Spirit in our lives we will not possess the fruits of the Spirit or be able to love each other from a pure heart. It is impossible for Christians to be saved or partake of the divine nature without receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul said that no one belongs to Christ unless they possess the Holy Spirit. Find out how you can receive the Holy Spirit and how your life can be dramatically changed as a result. The life-transforming power of the Holy Spirit is a very important gift from God that enables every believer to reach his full potential in Christ.
WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the triune Godhead or trinity (Mt. 28:19). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God or Spirit of Christ. The Holy Spirit is as much God as is the Father and as is Christ. The Bible also refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of truth (Jn. 14:17, 15:26, 16:13, Rom. 9:1; 1 Jn. 4:2, 5:6), the Spirit of holiness (Rom. 1:4), the revelator or Spirit of prophecy (1 Tim. 4:1; 1 Pet. 1:11,12; 2 Pet. 1:21; 1 Jn. 2:20; Rev. 2:7, 19:10), the Spirit of wisdom and knowledge (Acts 6:3; Eph. 1:17, 3:5), the Spirit of life (Rev. 11:11), the Spirit of glory (1 Pet. 4:14), the Comforter (Jn. 14:16,26), and the Spirit of promise (Eph. 1:13).
WHAT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT LIKE?
The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as being like a well of water springing up that continually satisfies and keeps ones thirst quenched (Jn. 4:14). The Holy Spirit is also described as being like rivers of living water flowing out of ones belly (Jn. 7:38), a breath of air from the Lord (Jn. 20:22), a rushing mighty wind (Acts 2:2), cloven tongues of fire (Acts 2:3), and a voice from heaven (Rev. 14:13).
BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!
It is absolutely essential that every believer in Christ receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The Lord gives the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who: believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 7:39), have faith in Christ (Gal. 3:2,14), seek for it and ask for it (Lk. 11:14), obey Him (Acts 5:32), are the chosen vessels of the Lord (Lk. 1:15, 35, 67), and to those who have repented of their sins and have been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of those sins, becoming born again (Mt. 3:16; Jn. 3:5,6; Acts 1:5, 2:38). The Father promises to give the Holy Spirit to all who fulfill these Biblical requirements (Lk. 24:49; Acts 2:33,38,39).
The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a baptism of fire (Mt. 3:11; Jn. 1:33; Acts 2:3, 11:16). The reason why it is called a baptism of fire is because fire is a refiner and purifier. At the new birth when we are baptized for the remission of our sins the Holy Spirit cleanses and purifies the heart and soul. All of the past stains, defilements, and pollutions of sin are washed away and removed. This act whereby God cleanses and removes the stains of sin in our life is called sanctification and occurs when we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:16; 1 Cor. 6:11; 2 Thes. 2:13; Tit. 3:5; 1 Pet. 1:2,22). This mighty cleansing of the heart and soul prepares the repentant believer for the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does not dwell in an unclean or unholy temple so He cleans house and makes one holy before moving in (1 Cor. 3:16,17, 6:19,20; 2 Cor. 6:16-18).
HOW HOLY SPIRIT IS RECEIVED
The Holy Spirit is generally received by the elect after baptism into Christ and after prayer and the laying on of hands by sanctified believers (Acts 8:15-17, 9:17; Rom. 6:3,4, 8:1-10). The scriptures tell us that the way in which the Holy Spirit is received by the believer is when He falls upon them (Lk. 2:25; Acts 10:45, 11:15), is poured out upon them from on high (Is. 32:15, 44:3; Ez. 39:29; Acts 10:45) decends upon them (Lk. 3:22), comes upon (Acts 19:6) fills or indwells (Lk. 1:41,67, 4:1; Acts 2:4, 4:8, 6:3,5, 11:24, 13:9,52) and is received into the heart (Gal. 4:6).
SIGNS OF THE SPIRIT-FILLED
The Bible declares that those who possess the indwelling Spirit of God will be different. They will be able to do the works of Jesus because His Spirit is inside of them. The gifts of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:3-11; Heb. 2:4) will enable them to: heal the sick, cast out devils, speak with other tongues (foreign languages) as the Spirit gives utterance (Acts 2:4, 10:46; Mk. 16:17-20), prophesy, preach the word with boldness and with powerful demonstrations of the Spirit (Acts 4:8,31; 1 Cor. 2:4,13, 12:3; 2 Cor. 3:6; 1 Pet. 1:12; 1 Thes. 1:5) 4:8,31; 1 Cor. 2:4,13, 12:3; 2 Cor. 3:6; 1 Pet. 1:12; 1 Thes. 1:5) have a ministry that confirms the preaching of the Word with mighty signs, wonders and supernatural miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 1:18,20; Mk. 16:20; Acts 5:12; Rom. 15:19). Ministers of the gospel are given inspiration to speak or write as they are moved by the Holy Spirit (Acts 28:25; Rom. 9:1; 2 Cor. 3:3; 2 Pet. 1:21). In Character those who have the indwelling Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:9; 1 Cor. 6:19; Gal. 4:6; Eph. 2:22; 2 Tim. 1:14; 1 Pet. 1:11; 1 Jn. 3:24, 4:13) are filled with the love of God and the fruits of righteousness (Lk. 2:25; Rom. 5:5; Eph. 5:9; Phil. 1:11; 1 Pet. 1:22). The virtues or fruits of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance) will be manifested in their life (Gal. 5:22,23). By walking in the Spirit Christians are able to mortify the sinful deeds and lusts of the flesh and maintain holiness (Rom. 8:9-13; Gal. 5:16-26). Spirit-filled Christians are the only ones who can successfully overcome the world, the flesh and the devil and fulfill
the will of God (1 Jn. 2:14-17, 5:4,5). The Holy Spirit completely transforms those He indwells by: purging their conscience from dead works (Heb. 9:14), purifying their souls with the truth (1 Pet. 1:22), conforming them to the Lords image (2 Cor. 3:18), putting His righteous moral laws into their hearts and minds (Ez. 36:26; Heb. 10:16) perfecting the love of God in their hearts and lives (Ro. 5:5; Col.1:8; 1 Jn. 4:7-14) and by spiritually strengthening the inner man (Eph. 3:6; 2, 6:18; Rom. 8:1-27; Tim. 1:7).
HOLY SPIRIT CALLS AND LEADS
The spiritual blessings of the Holy Spirit in one’s life, is invaluable. The Holy Spirit takes on a primary role in helping, leading, guiding, comforting, anointing, revealing, teaching, empowering, strengthening, confirming, inspiring and instructing those who have been called so they can fulfill the will of God. The only way to know and fulfill the will of God in your life is to be led by the Spirit (Acts 15:28, 16:6,7; Rom. 8:14; Gal. 5:18). The Spirit will teach you everything you need to know, say or do (Lk. 12:12; Jn. 3:34, 6:45, 14:26; Acts 13:4, 16:6; 2 Cor. 2:13; 1 Thes. 4:9; Heb. 3:7; 1 Jn. 2:20). He will speak to us and instruct or command us (Neh. 9:20; Job 32:8; Is. 6:8; Acts 1:2, 10:19, 13:2; Heb. 3:7), guide us into all truth (Jn. 15:3), reveal future events and other things to His people (Lk. 2:26; Jn. 16:13; Acts 21:11, 28:25; 1 Cor. 2:10; Eph. 1:17, 3:5; 1 Tim. 4:1; 1 Jn. 2:20; Rev. 19:10), comforts us so we will not fear dangerous circumstances, hardships or other difficulties (Is. 51:12; Jn. 14:16, 15:26, 16:7; Acts 9:31), help us overcome temptations and attacks from the enemy (Is. 59:19; Eph. 6:19) calls, sends, ordains, anoints, and approves for service and ministry (Is. 48:16, 61:1; Acts 2:39, 6:3,5, 10:38, 13:2-4; 2 Cor. 6:4-6; Eph. 4:4), empowers, guides and helps the elect accomplish their work for the Lord (Is. 42:11; Zec. 12:10; Mic. 3:8; Lk. 24:49; Acts 1:8, 4:3,33, 5:32, 10:38), provides us with all the wisdom, spiritual understanding and knowledge that we need (Ex. 35:31; Is. 11:2, 54:13, 59:21) gives us proper judgment and discernment when needed and reproves and convicts us of our sins (Is. 28:6; Jn. 16:8). He reveals many things to us: by speaking to us (Is. 6:8), by words of prophecy and by divinely inspired dreams and visions (1 Cor. 14:3; Joel 2:28).
DANGERS TO AVOID!
If we want to be sealed or confirmed (Eph. 1:13,14, 4:30; 2 Cor. 1:22; 1 Jn. 5:6-8) by the Holy Spirit of promise until the day of redemption we must avoid: quenching Him (1 Thes. 5:19), grieving Him (Eph. 4:30), vexing Him (Is. 63:10), lying to or tempting Him (Acts 5:3), drunkenness (Eph. 5:18). The Lord can take His precious Holy Spirit away from you (Gen. 6:3; Hos. 5:6; Ps. 51:11). .If you have never received the Holy Spirit avoid despising or blaspheming Him (Mt. 12:31; Heb. 10:29), seeking Him for wrong motives (Acts 15:18,19) resisting or rejecting Him (Is. 30:1; Acts 7:51) or trying to receive the Holy Spirit without repentance (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 1 Cor. 2:14).
FELLOWSHIP
The Lord not only wants to bless you by spiritually providing you with the things you need to reach your full potential in Christ but he also wants to have intimate fellowship with you (2 Cor. 13:14; Phil. 2:1) through the indwelling of His precious Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:23; Gal. 4:5,6; 1 Jn. 3:24, 4:13).
