In India last year, there were 486 reported cases of violence against Christians, - an increase of 75% from 2020. And since many incidents go unreported or unrecorded, the number is probably much higher. The United Christian Forum called it the most violent year for Christians in India according to the news site The Quint.
It's clear that intervention from the government is needed, but can we trust them with the lives of our brothers and sisters?
Maybe not. Because despite the obvious spike in attacks, the Indian Supreme Court has ruled that it finds "no urgency" to hear a case filed by Christians to request protection from mob attacks. The writ petition was filed on March 4th by the Archbishop of Bangalore, Dr. Peter Machado, together with the National Solidarity Forum and the EVangelical Fellowship of India.
The Archbishop Machado asked the court to hear the case, noting its extreme urgency. Instead, the court left it in limbo and did not schedule it. "No date, there's no urgency.....Nothing will happen, heavens don't fall," said the Chief Justice of India.
Open Doors spokesperson Rinzen Baleng said, "The alarming increase in the number of attacks on Christians and their property across India stipulates urgent protective measures. If the courts wait for for the passing of a certain threshold of further attacks before any impactful action is taken, it might just be too late."
The lawsuit requested a Special Investigation Team to register criminal cases and prosecute groups responsible for attacking Christians. This would give police protection to Christians under threat of attack by violent mobs and to prosecute political and social groups responsible for violence against Christians.
Father, please give your sons and daughters in India favor with their government. Please intervene in the courts so that those with the power would recognise what is happening and take action. Convict the judges of their own bias and open their eyes to the injustice against Christians. Pour out your patience on believers as they wait for Your hand of mercy to move on their behalf.
