In the Olivet Discourse, Jesus used the analogy of birth pains to describe the signs of the end times. He said, These things are the beginning of birth pains, (Matthew 24:8 WEB). Birth pains, by nature, are intermittent. They come and go, and their intensity and frequency increase as the time of delivery approaches. Similarly, events and signs of the end times may not be constant; there may be periods of intensity followed by periods of relative calm.
The dull, mundane periods in the news do not negate the fact that we are in the end times. It is important to remember that Jesus also warned us that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2 WEB). This means that while we should be aware of the signs of the times, we should not be caught off guard or become complacent during periods of calm.
The biblical passage also tells us, For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night. For when they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman; and they will in no way escape, (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3 WEB).
Instead of constantly looking for signs in the news, let us focus on being spiritually prepared and living in a manner pleasing to God. Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we come before You, seeking Your will and guidance. Help us to stay awake, watching, and praying, as Jesus commanded. Help us not to be caught off guard or become complacent, but to be always ready for His return. Help us remember the words of the Bible: But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. (1 Peter 4:7 WEB).
Grant us the grace to live holy and godly lives, looking forward to the day of God and hastening its coming (2 Peter 3:11-12 WEB). Give us wisdom asking for a godly spouse to discern the times in which we live, and help us to be a light in this world, sharing the good news with others as they prepare for the impending judgment to come. Give us courage to discuss all issues and not shy away from controversy.
In the matchless name of Jesus Christ, we pray together. Amen.
