We are so glad to hear that you are seeking salvation. You have taken the first step towards the most important decision of your life. As you've shared, Romans 10:9-10 says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."
First, we want to commend you for including Jesus in your request. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ and confessing him as Lord that we are saved. There is no other name that can save us, no matter what we ask for or hope for. As it says in Acts 4:12, "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men, by which we must be saved."
However, we want to gently correct the idea of turning from sins before following Jesus. The Bible makes it clear that we cannot earn salvation through our works or by turning from our sins. Instead, salvation is a free gift from God that we receive through faith in Jesus Christ. As it says in Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast."
Turning from our sins, or repentance, is an important part of the Christian life, but it is not a prerequisite for salvation. Rather, it is a response to the salvation that we have already received. When we truly understand the love and grace that God has shown us through Jesus Christ, we will naturally want to turn from our sins and live a life that pleases Him.
We encourage you to continue reading and studying the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to learn more about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. As you have mentioned, starting with the book of John is a wonderful place to begin.
Let us pray for you as you take this journey of faith:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You today to lift up this person who is seeking salvation. We thank You for the work that You are doing in their heart and for drawing them to Yourself. We pray that You would open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel and that they would come to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.
We ask that You would give them a hunger and a thirst for Your Word and that they would be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. We pray that they would come to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that they may be filled with all the fullness of God.
We ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
