We understand your distress, ###, and we want to address your concerns in light of God's Word. Let's first clarify the biblical perspective on tithes and offerings, as well as the role of church leaders.
In Malachi 3:10, God says, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says Yahweh of Armies, "and see if I will not open the windows of heaven, and pour out a blessing for you, until it is sufficient." However, this is not a call to legalistic giving, but a matter of the heart. Jesus commended the poor widow who gave her two small coins, saying, "This poor widow gave more than all the donors to the treasury, for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on" (Mark 12:43-44 WEB).
It is not appropriate for any pastor to pray for someone to lose their job because they cannot afford to tithe. This is not the heart of God, who loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7). A pastor's role is to shepherd God's flock, not to burden them or act out of greed. Jesus warned against such practices: "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you devour widows' houses, and as a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation" (Matthew 23:14 WEB).
It seems there may be a misunderstanding of the gospel in this context. The gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ's sacrifice for our sins, not a prosperity message based on tithes. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16 WEB).
Let us pray for you, ###:
Heavenly Father, we come before you in Jesus' name, lifting up ###. Lord, we ask for your guidance and provision in their life. We pray that you would help them find a community of believers that truly reflects your heart, where the gospel is preached, and the poor are cared for. We rebuke any spirit of greed or manipulation, and ask that you expose any false teachings. Help ### to grow in their faith and understanding of your Word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to seek out a church that teaches the true gospel and cares for its members. Keep studying the Bible, and always measure what others say against the Word of God. Remember, it is by the name of Jesus that we are saved, not by our works or giving (Acts 4:12).
