Why did God say that?

In Genesis, after God created Adam, and before Eve was created,God stated, "It's not good for the man to be alone."Now the question is,by God stating,"It's not good for THE man to be alone",was He referring to just Adam,in his current situation, or it meant everybody?Because if He meant everybody, there are some of us{like me, and some others}who actually have reasons they PREFER to be alone, and do things alone. Not only that, I can give reasons ,and examples, that there are certain ADVANTAGES to being alone, or doing things alone.Like, if you have a certain pattern that works for you, if you take care of your thing with someone else, it usually messes up your plan. This has happened to meSecond, if you're in an overcrowded area, you could get stuck in a traffic jam at the "wrong"time.{Rush hour.}If you're zipping along alone on an isolated desert road, you make better time, save gas, etc. If you were on the subway in New York City at rush hour{done that} you sometimes can't even get a strap to hang on to,let alone that you're standing for 45 minutes,I'm sure everyone there at that time would prefer to be the only one in the car.You think someone on the L.A. freeway at rush hour wouldn't rather have the highway to themselves? This is an overpopulated world, in Mexico City cars with certain license plates aren't allowed into the city on certain days because of the smog problem, caused by too many cars. In Tokyo, there are officers who push people into the train cars just to make them fit in. How about. people in a big family who need to use the bathroom,or use it to take a shower, and there's always someone in there in their small 8 person house?SOME people can't deal with doing things alone. But we're all different.I hope God was referring to Adam specifically , or people in general, and didn't use it as a blanket statement for everyone.Try to read the Bible with some chatterbox bending your ear.

Have you ever read 1 Corinthians 7? There are those that have the gift of celibacy but that doesn't mean that they are alone. You may have the gift but does that mean that you are ever alone especially from all you just said? I enjoy saying at times that I am alone with Jesus and I enjoy being alone with Jesus but I am also married. We are less alone now that Jesus has fulfilled prophecy and we have the Holy Spirit to fill us than at the time Adam and Eve sinned. They looked forward to salvation spiritually where we have salvation now spiritually but we still look forward to the completion of salvation physically. At times there are more than 2 meanings to something we are studying in God's Word. There is a meaning for the time then & the time now & a time in the future, a physical meaning & a spiritual meaning also comes into fact as well. We cannot ever tire of studying and learning from reading Jesus' Word.

Ok,that would explain it.In my case, I have the opposite problem of loneliness,I feel I deal with too many people, job related and otherwise.Remember the Bible says "all things in moderation",so when you said it can have different meanings in different situations, that explained it. I"All things in moderation", I'm sure God wouldn't say to someone in the other extreme, the New York subway at rush hour or on the L.A. freeway, that's wonderful that you're not alone. Those people have the opposite problem.

I don't think you fully understand the concept of being alone but I don't fully understand it either. No one in our day has ever spent a single day alone. Have you ever walked off into the woods naked to only live by the wisdom and only the wisdom God has only given you? We take for granted our clothes, our shelter, our cars, our tv's, our radios, our books etc, etc, etc. God was alone for an eternity past before He ever created one single thing and only by His wisdom and only His understanding was He able to do anything. We live our lives based on where other people's lives have brought us. We have running water because God gave our brothers and sisters wisdom to have running water. We drive our cars and go places and do things because of wisdom God gave someone else. I have tried to imagine being alone and it is impossible for us to fully understand being alone. Adam knew that concept better than we can, we do not and we cannot fully comprehend being alone. I believe that is one of the points when God said it is not good that Adam is alone. We are not alone even if we think we are.

Well those are the basics. But no getting around the Bible also says"All things in moderation",so in my case, I've had so much of one extreme,it would be a novelty to experience the other extreme. And a welcome relief.I didn't mean giving up the basics. No, we can't experience being alone these days because the world is so overpopulated that we couldn't be alone if we tried!!{My point}But I do know this__if I have a day where I've been dealing with everyone and their cousin, and putting up with their idiosyncrasies, I try to find a quiet spot by myself. And I'm disappointed if someone comes over at that time.I've taken long car car trips alone, long walks, etc.I can also focus better when I'm alone, there might be noisy people around me that break my concentration.About giving up the basics, no, I wouldn't want my car to break down on a desert highway, but if the car is sound,I would rather have that extreme than driving in rush hour in a big city.Look at cats.A dog whimpers if left alone{like people}but do you think a cat cares?Leave a cat alone all day with food and water and a clean litter box, they don't care if you're gone all day.If you try to play with your cat when it's not in the mood,it will walk away.I agree with you about the basics being met, other than that,I actually see advantages to being alone.{Privacy, less competition for things.}I like your other answer, the statement that it can apply in different ways.

P.S._If Adam had been on the New York subway at rush hour,I'm sure he'd beg God to go back to that peaceful Garden real fast!!HE couldn't understand what we're facing nowadays, either. It's a matter of which extreme you're dealing with.

God was simply and clearly stating the general truth that it was not God's intention for man to be an individual and since God Himself is a community with the Trinity that He wanted man to be a family and social being with other humans because he already had God and animals, probably even pets since dogs, cats and horses had already been created. He also wanted to create specifically a helper for the man which was woman -- a fellow heir of the grace of life Peter says.

Let's not make Scripture try to say anything other than it clearly states. Let's rightly divide the Word of truth and maybe pray for help in that (2 Tim 3:16).

At the end of the day, I still like my solitude

Your solitude is not what God is talking about in Genesis 2:18, Steven -- he finished his thought by saying he will make a helper suitable for the man.

If you want Scriptures on solitude you can find plenty in the Gospels when it says Jesus would wake early in the morning and go out and pray, he would often go to solitary places to pray and after John the Baptist was killed He went to a lonely place on a lake. All men like some solitude, and Adam enjoyed peace and quiet in it's purest form -- he lived in a perpetual vacation in a literal paradise until the day he sinned and blew that high calling for our planet temporarily (until His Kingdom comes and the millennium begins, which returns us to why Jesus said to pray like He told us)...
