'Who Do They Say I Am?' - Mark 8:27

Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the villages near ###. As they were walking along, he asked them, "Who do people say I am?"

Key Thought​

If you ask people today who they think Jesus is, you will get a myriad of answers. Many folks don't know and quite a few don't care. The lost world's greatest needs are for Jesus' followers both to know who he really is and to demonstrate it in our lives!

Today's Prayer​

O Father in heaven, help us — and especially help me — better demonstrate who Jesus is to those around us. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

[Intercessor]

His next question is all important -- "Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
The response to Jesus' 1st question, "Who do people say I am?" (Mark 8:27), was answered with guesses, "“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets" (Mark 8:28).

It was utterly important that Christ's Apostles understood exactly who He was for them to fully submit to Him unlike any other prophet or teacher in order for them to 1st be regenerated then, 2nd, to emulate Him.

Only Peter spoke the answer, though others were probably thinking it by this time (Consider Nathanael's first encounter with Jesus in John 1:47-49 when Jesus told Nathanael He "saw Him under the fig tree")...

Isn't it utterly important to "confess with the mouth that 'Jesus is Lord'" (Rom 10:9)? That's what Jesus was getting to when He asked what others thought, to get them to not only believe inwardly, but also to confess, like this, when He asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah" (Mark 8:29).

People say, "Preach the gospel, use words if necessary" (Not in the Bible). What a lie from the devil himself. You could be a good Mormon or Jehovah Witness and lead a moral life, or be a Ghandi...

Paul says, "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ" (Rom 10:17). Jesus and Paul seem to be after confession. Doesn't John record that it was when Jesus made the water into wine at the wedding in Cana, "This was the beginning of the signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and He revealed His glory. And His disciples believed in Him" (John 2:11)?

Still to believe seems to not be enough for Christ or His Apostles, as it is written, "Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father in heaven" (Matthew 10:32). "I tell you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will also confess him before the angels of God" (Luke 12:8). "For with your heart you believe and are justified, and with your mouth you confess and are saved" (Romans 10:10).

Let's not get the cart before the horse, or try to exemplify Jesus without confessing Him, who He was (Messiah, Son of God in Power), what He did (died a sacrificial death though sinless for our particular sins), why He did it (to obey The Father and Ransom a People for God and Himself), and we might as well keep going, That he was raised from the dead, Sat down at the right hand of God, and is coming again to judge the living and the dead (Any of the Early Creeds and The Sum of The Scriptures).
