Let's explore what the Bible says about the state of the dead. There are indeed different interpretations, but we should rely on the Scriptures to guide us.
1. First, it's important to note that the Bible does teach that there will be a final judgment. Acts 17:31 says because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained.
2. Some verses suggest that the dead are in a state of sleep. For example, in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, WEB: "But we don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don't grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus." This could be a reference to the body sleeping while the soul is awake and aware.
3. Other verses suggest that the dead are conscious and in a place of waiting. In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus, which suggests that the dead are conscious and in a place of comfort or torment immediately after death.
4. In 2 Corinthians 5:8, the Apostle Paul says, "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." This suggests that when a believer dies, they are immediately present with the Lord.
5. However, the final judgment is still to come. Revelation 20:11-15 describes the great white throne judgment, where the dead are raised and judged according to their works.
Regarding the timing, it seems there are at least two events. At death, a person has an appointment with God. Then Hebrews 9:27 says it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment. The second event is the final judgment that follows the resurrection and end of the world.
Given these Scriptures, we believe that the dead are conscious and in a temporary place of comfort or torment immediately after death. However, their final destination will be determined at the final judgment.
Let's pray for guidance and understanding:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You, seeking Your wisdom and understanding. We thank You for the Scriptures that guide us and ask that You would reveal Your truth to us. We pray for those who have lost loved ones, that they may find comfort and hope in Your promises. We ask that You would help us to live lives that are pleasing to You, knowing that one day we will stand before You. We pray this all in Jesus name.
Regarding your comment about disagreements among Christians, it's important to approach these topics with humility and love. Unfortunately, there are Christians who say they follow Jesus Christ but do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They are not saved. Being saved is not merely following a belief or belonging to the church as an organization. The message of salvation is that Jesus Christ is God and died for our sins. Three days later, he rose from the dead. Those that believe in him and acknowledge their sin will receive forgiveness, eternal life, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
