What To Do When Everything Seems To Go Wrong
Acts 16:16-34
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation. And this she did many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, trouble our city, And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. Then the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates tore off their clothes, and were commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they cast them into prison, ordering the jailor to keep them securely: Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.â€
Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. He brought them out and said,“Sirs, what must I do to be saved?†So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.†Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. He took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
As it was with Paul and Silas, there are times we can do all we know that is right and it seems as if all the forces of hell strikes out against us. Paul and Silas left us a great example what to do when dark and troublesome times like these arise. I am sure neither Paul or Silas felt like singing or praying or praising the Lord, being they were railed at, beaten profusely and thrown in prison, but these guy's rose up above their circumstances. They prayed, they sang and worshipped God and as we see God heard them and intervened powerfully. Not only did He free them from shackles, chains and prison but saved the jailer and all his household.
Next time the enemy comes against you with all his evil forces, remember the example Paul and Silas gave us. Rise up above the circumstances no matter how your feeling and begin to pray and sing and worship God. God rescued them, and He is standing ready to rescue you too.
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Psalms 34:7 The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
