What is Love (capital 'L')
This topic has many verses to draw from. Too many to list in one blog. Please feel free to share verses and your understanding on Love.
KEY VERSE
1 Corinthians 13:2
And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
This verse brings the importance of Love into clarity without ambiguity into our Christian lives. There is nothing on earth more important than Love, yes nothing! We must understand it. Without it we cannot engage in a proper relationship with God, nor can we fully understand the nature of Love.
1 John 4:16
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. God is Love.
Our omnipotent God is Love. Understanding Love is understanding our Creator. Imagine if you will the creation of our universe. God drew from within His being (Love) and spoke everything into existence. From Love He manifested a clear act of His magnificence Love.
Our first two commandments is about Love. Jesus stated that all other commandments hang on these two commandments.
Matthew 22:37-40
37. “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
38. “This is the first and great commandment.”
39. “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
40. “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
Note the latter law. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” It implies that you must Love yourself and that could only take place if you are anchored in Love (God) in the first place. Any other love is really a counterfeit.
What are some of Love's Characteristics
Love is a fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
These traits originate from the Spirit. Consequently they must have similar characteristics of the Spirit. They most certainly did not originate from our selfish carnality because the Spirit demands communion and sharing. It is selfless.
The fruits of the Spirit are not temporary or destructive nor can it tolerate evil as seen in the garden. The garden of Eden can be viewed as a representation of a sacred place to commune with God. The garden (symbolically God/Spirit) does not tolerate evil, consequently Adam and Eve were expelled from the Most Holy Place because of their sin.
Love is an absolutism that cannot tolerate evil or selfishness. It's shared, it's forever and is of God. God created us in His image...Love.
Philippians 2:1-4
1. Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2. then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
3. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
The above verses emphasize on selfless acts better understood as sacrificial Love.
Love (Godly) is act of faith to honourably pursue the edification, prosperity, and the well-being of everyone without prejudice and conditions.
You must even Love your enemy, for it is written. Every act from a Christian should be an act of Love.
God bless you and fill you with His Love, in Jesus precious name, amen.
