"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'" -Mark 12:30
Notice the three things that this passage tells us about how to love God. With all of our heart, our soul, and our strength.
The heart represents our emotions. The heart is a vital area of our bodies, and in order to let someone close to your heart you must let them get close to a very vulnerable part of you. You must be vulnerable to God. We must be who we are, and not try and save face with God because he already knows who we are on the inside. We must be willing to confide our deepest thoughts and feelings to Him, and we must show complete commitment.
Our soul represents our identity, who we are beyond our physical bodies. We must surrender our soul to Jesus, in other words, we must make our identity in Jesus.
Our minds represent our thoughts. How often do we think of God? Is every single one of our thoughts under captivity for Christ? Or do we have wandering minds that get us into trouble and produce no fruit for the Kingdom of God?
Our strength represents what we do. What are we able to do for God? Are we capable of giving more of our effort to Christ? Can we volunteer more, can we give more offerings, and can we study more about God, can we pray more? What are the things that we can do for him?
Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength must all be united in following Christ. Personally, I know that all of these do not necessarily work together at the same time. When I first accepted Jesus into my life, he remained in my mind, and there was little emotional attachment. I put my strength into going to church and reading the Bible, and I was working on creating my identity in Christ. The more that I gave God my mind and strength, the more I discovered a greater love in my heart for him, and with that realization my soul identity followed.
I pray that you would get to know God on all of those levels. I pray that your personal relationship with Him would flourish and that you would be blessed by drawing closer to your Father in Heaven.
