Proverbs 18:22 :
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD.
Extended Explanation:
This verse highlights the value of marriage and the blessing that a good wife brings into a man’s life. It teaches that finding a wife is a good thing and is seen as a gift from God. The word “finds” implies that there is effort and intentionality involved. It suggests that a good marriage doesn’t just happen by accident but requires seeking, appreciating, and valuing the person God brings into your life. The phrase “receives favor from the Lord” shows that marriage is more than just a human arrangement—it is a blessing from God. When a man finds a good wife, he not only gains a partner but also experiences God’s favor in his life. This verse reminds us that marriage is a precious gift, one that should be cherished and honored.
Historical Context:
In the culture of ancient Israel, marriage was highly valued and seen as a foundation for the family and community. The people understood that a good marriage brought stability, joy, and prosperity. In those times, marriage was not just about romantic love; it was also about partnership, companionship, and mutual support. A wife was seen as a valuable partner who contributed to the household and helped her husband in fulfilling God’s purposes. In biblical times, marriage was often arranged by families, but there was still an emphasis on the importance of finding a good and virtuous partner. This proverb would have been an encouragement to men to seek a wife who is wise, loving, and devoted, as such a union would be a source of great blessing.
Theological Implications:
Theologically, this verse reflects God’s design for marriage. God created marriage to be a relationship of love, partnership, and mutual support. The Bible consistently teaches that marriage is a good and holy institution, meant to reflect God’s love for His people. In Genesis 2:18, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” This shows that God values companionship and created marriage as a way to fulfill that need. Marriage is also a way through which God blesses His people. A loving, committed marriage brings joy, stability, and fulfillment. It also provides a context for raising children, building a strong family, and serving others together. By seeing marriage as a blessing from God, we acknowledge that it is not just a human arrangement but something sacred that God has ordained.
How This Verse Relates to a Loving God:
God’s love for us is shown in the way He created marriage as a source of companionship, joy, and mutual support. God knows that it is not good for us to be alone, and He provides the gift of a loving spouse to enrich our lives. Marriage is a reflection of God’s own love, showing us how to care for, serve, and love another person deeply. God’s favor is not just seen in material blessings but in the relationships He gives us. A good marriage is one of the ways God shows His goodness to His people. It is a relationship where His love can be experienced and shared.
How This Verse Connects to Jesus Christ:
Jesus is often described as the bridegroom, with the church being His bride (Ephesians 5:25-27). This image shows that marriage is a reflection of Christ’s love for His people. Just as Christ loves the church selflessly and sacrificially, husbands are called to love their wives with the same kind of devotion. Jesus also taught about the sacredness of marriage, emphasizing that it was designed by God from the beginning (Matthew 19:4-6). By following Christ’s example of love, sacrifice, and commitment, married couples can experience a deeper, more meaningful relationship that honors God.
How can we honestly and sincerely respect and appreciate someone who is so imperfect?
1) Accept the Reality of Human Relationships
2) Accept the Reality of Human Marriage
3) Accept the Reality of our Own Sin
4) Accept the Call to Praiseworthy Thinking
5) Accept the Reality of our Decision
6) Accept the Biblical Call to Respect
7) Form our Heart through Prayer
8) Ask God to Change Us
Go into prayer armed with two lists: our spouse’s (or acquaintances) strengths and our own weaknesses.
We’re All in This Together :
Every one of us is married to an imperfect spouse (or acquaintances). We confront different trials, different temptations, and different struggles—but each one of us faces the same reality: living as imperfect people, in an imperfect world, with an imperfect spouse (or acquaintances). Learning to love, appreciate, and to be thankful for that imperfect spouse (or acquaintances) are one of the most soul-transforming things we can do. It’s not an easy journey, but it’s a profitable one, and urge ourselves to remain committed to it everyday. If we can learn how to appreciate an imperfect person, others will feel blessed indeed—but we will feel blessed even more. If they come unto our life and surely with the help of Jesus Christ, we will surely have a breakthrough of it.
Our prayer:
Heavenly Father , thank You for loving us, even with our flaws and all. We are far from perfect but still You love us and accept us. Please forgive our sins and shortcomings. Help us become more and more like Your image each day. LORD God, we pray that You use us to reach Your people. Help us to be patient, and kind, and forgiving, and nonjudgmental like You. Help us see people as You see them. Jesus took God’s anger in our stead, He died for us and endured all the pain we deserved . Thanking our good LORD for being a mediator to reconnect ourselves to God receiving the empowerment of God’s Holy Spirit’s righteousness and holiness over us as we receive the grace of our faith in Jesus Christ. In His mighty name we give all the glory and praise. Amen.
