WALKING IN LIGHT OR DARKNESS
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!†Matthew 6:22-23
Are you walking in light? Do you know someone that you love very much who is walking in darkness right now? Your spouse or a loved one is walking in darkness if they have opened their eyes, mind and life up to the sins and ways of the world. Has your spouse fallen into a prison of darkness? If yes, never stop praying for the Lord to open their eyes to see the way of escape.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.†John 8:12
Our Lord Jesus is the true light and only He can remove the darkness from your husband or wife’s life or even in your own life. That is very important for you to understand. Are you praising the Lord for your salvation of God’s grace and mercy in touching and changing your life today and every day?
You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. Psalm 18:28
We are hearing from standers whose spouses have started dating, willing to do counseling or they are stopping by their home more frequently and having meals with the family. They are testing the waters of what home would be like if they returned. Praise the Lord as the Holy Spirit is moving on prodigal spouses’ hearts. Never forget that the Holy Spirit is moving in your spouse’s life all the time while they are living in the far country. You are just not aware of all that the Lord has been orchestrating. That is where you must have faith, hope and trust in the Lord at all times.
The spouse who comes home repenting, asking for forgiveness, and growing in the Lord will be able to rebuild their marriage on the solid rock of Jesus Christ much easier and quicker than a spouse who comes home, but does not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of their life. What can you do? May you never stop praying for your spouse's salvation and repentance of the sins in their life.
Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.†John 12:44-46
“‘To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’†Acts 26:18
“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off -- for all whom the Lord our God will call.†Acts 2:38-39
We know of some spouses who move back home and may stay for a few weeks or months. We know of others who are living at home, but the praying spouse thinks their mate has not totally severed the other relationship. What can you as a stander do? You can pray! God is still in control.
May we never forget that this is a spiritual battle between darkness and light! This is why Bob wrote his book, Finding The Way Home, because of the many emails and letters that we received. Bob had been there and he understood what your spouse is going through, as he went through the same roller coaster emotions and feelings as he was living in sin and then came home suddenly in obedience to his Damascus Road experience at the restaurant. He wrote a book to your beloved spouse about the process of coming home, when they are ready to receive some help from another prodigal. Ask the Lord when it is time to give it to them and then pray that the Holy Spirit will have them read it.
We pray that you will always be able to tell your spouse that you are praying and waiting for them to return home at any time. Are you praying as the Prodigal Son's father did in waiting and expecting his son to “come to his senses†as Jesus told us in Luke 15? The prodigal son repented and asked for forgiveness of his sins.
“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’†Luke 15:21
Bob always knew that something had happened to my life with my Lord. I had called Bob, repenting of my part in the failure of our marriage. I also told him that God had touched and spoken to my heart and that I had made the worst mistake in my life by giving up on our marriage and divorcing him in spite of his unfaithfulness. I repented and asked for his forgiveness. I told Bob I would be praying and waiting for our Lord to heal and rebuild our marriage on the solid rock of Jesus Christ. I really meant it forever. Where are you?
I pray that you will seek the Lord and pray that the Holy Spirit will speak to you exactly when and what you are to tell your spouse in that very important conversation. I am confident that as you grow in the Lord and spend time with Him, He will tell you exactly what to say and at God’s perfect timing you will share God's unconditional love and that you are standing for the restoration of your marriage.
After that, let go and let God deal with your spouse in what they are thinking or in what they are believing. Every day lay your beloved spouse in the arms of your Lord Jesus. He will love and guide your spouse out of the darkness that they opened their body, soul and spirit to by falling into the temptation of sins. Your spouse may have felt they prayed and nothing happened and they felt they could not live in their miserable marriage. You may have contributed due to your behavior or actions. Repent, ask for forgiveness and pray for their heart to be softened as they see you transform into a new creature in Christ.
Do not walk in fear, but walk in faith, knowing the power of your mighty, awesome God. You must keep being faithful in praying and reading God’s Word. Never forget that there is power in prayer. Every day pray that your spouse will repent, forgive and turn their heart over to our Lord and Savior for them to receive freedom from the sins of this world. Then they will see the Lord’s light and have the darkness removed from their heart. Prodigals do come home - and stay home! Are you ready?
