Instead of celebrating Novavax as a safe, traditional, effective, vaccine, the US Government has been trying hard to suppress it. First of all, the FDA waited seven and a half months to authorize Novavax’s EUA while many Americans were waiting for an alternative to MRNA vaccines. The Novavax vaccine had been authorized for use in South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, India, the European Union, Thailand, Switzerland, Japan, and all member countries of the World Health Organization. Yet in the USA, American citizens who paid for the the Novavax vaccine did not have access to it. A few days before the FDA finally set up their advisory panel to examine the Novavax data, they released a statement that they thought Novavax should have a label for pericarditis and myocarditis. This came as a surprise to everyone who knew the Novavax data because the rate of myocarditis was balanced between the vaccine and placebo arms (0.007% and 0.005%) and both the placebo and control rates of heart inflammation were within the expected rate in a large group of people. It looked like a smear to put Novavax on an even playing field with Moderna and Pfizer who both were known to carry heart inflammation as a side effect. The FDA finally authorized Novavax's EUA, but because Novavax is only authorized in the USA as a primary series, many Americans who want to boost with a traditional protein based vaccine or vaccinate their adolescent children with a traditional protein based vaccine still do not have access to Novavax. Adolescent and booster authorizations for Novavax are being administered around the world, yet the US FDA continues to stall Novavax. Novavax has even been shown to produce neutralizing antibodies against all variants, including Omicron BA5. This is not surprising because a protein based vaccine works differently than an MRNA vaccine. Despite having a vaccine that protects against all the variants, the FDA is suggesting that the formulation be changed for the fall because MRNA vaccines are not working against Omicron. The Novavax vaccine is being smeared and neglected despite its outstanding data, ease of storage, and traditional platform. Protein vaccines have a well established track record. Many childhood immunizations use a protein platform. The HPV, Hepatitis B, acellualr pertussis, pneumococcal, meningococcal, diphtheria, and tetanus vaccines all safely use a protein platform. People are comfortable with protein vaccines because they are effective, safe, stable, and suitable for people with compromised immune systems. Why are American regulators constantly keeping Novavax one step behind the MRNA vaccines? Every time we try to follow the science, it keeps leading back to the money.
