This is from Charlyne Cares at rejoice marriage ministries. She stood for 2 years for her husband to return who left her for another woman. Here is his testimony on what he felt the whole time he was gone. His wife never stopped praying for him and he didn't even known she was praying, but he felt it.
HEARING GOD’S VOICE
For God does speak-now one way, now another-though man may not perceive it. Job 33:14
Have you ever heard some start a sentence with, "God told me ...†and wondered if God had really spoken to them, or if the thought was just something they had conjured up? After all, if God has never spoken to you, why should you believe that He would speak to others? My goal is to help you to see how often God does speak to each of us.
Someone is asking, "What does God’s voice sound like?" I can tell you that I have never heard the voice of God, even though I have heard the voice of God many times. No, that is not a typo, nor a contradiction. God speaks to each of His children every day. It is not an audible voice that others could hear but His instruction given to each of us.
Let’s go back almost 25 years, to the time when Charlyne and I were divorced. Time and time again, I would wind up some place that was not pleasing to God. It was not by His hand, but my own plans that had taken me there. Time and time again, I would be in those circumstances, and "something" would be reminding me how wrong I was; that I needed to get out of there. That "something" was actually "Someone," and His name was the Holy Spirit of God.
Yes, God was speaking to me, even in my sinful condition! The Creator of all could have changed my life any way He desired, but He is patient, and continued speaking to me, in many circumstances, even when I did not acknowledge His voice. That soft voice finally became so loud in my life that I had to do something, so I offered to get a marriage license with my "ex," if she would stop praying for me. To make a long story short, we got a license, even though Charlyne promised to never stop praying. We went to lunch afterward, and God spoke to me about what a mistake I had made through divorce. We were remarried within two hours.
As prodigal to prodigal, we both know how easy it is to confuse the voice of our spouse with the voice of God. We can silence the voice of a mate by distance or non-disclosure of phone numbers, but God will keep right on speaking, regardless of where we go or what we do.
God speaks in many ways. He speaks through His Word, the Bible. He speaks to us in prayer. He speaks through signs and wonders, and yes, He speaks to each of us through an inner voice. Your life may be different, but living a prodigal lifestyle, I spent little time in the Bible or in prayer. Even when I attempted to close God out of my life, He continued to speak to me.
Now, looking back over years of remarriage, I can see how often God was speaking to me, how often I dismissed His voice, and how much different my life could have been, if I had listened and obeyed God’s voice each time He spoke.
God may speak to you regarding matters of protection. You sense so strongly that you should not drive a specific route, or sign a specific document. He will also speak to you regarding correction. God loves you just as you are, but loves you too much to leave you that way. One word God will not speak to you is that of rejection.
As long as you have a breath left, it is not too late to ask God to forgive you and to erase the sins of the past. Remember, none of us know when we will take our last breath. Sadly, we know prodigals who have gambled on one more season of sin before coming back to Christ, and they have lost. They have died in their sins and entered eternity without Jesus Christ, destined for the place we know as Hell.
One of my favorite accounts of God speaking to His people can be found in the Book of Acts:
About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat." "Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean." The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." Acts 10:9-15
If you have awoken, like I did, and found yourself a prodigal that you never intended to be, in the pig pens of life, knowing the right thing to do is to go home to a praying family, but hesitant to do so because of the guilt and shame, the verses above should give you encouragement.
The first stop on your journey back to God, and to your family, should be on your knees. Once you have done serious business with God about your sin, and repented, or turned from that sin, God’s command to you, to your family, to your friends, and yes, even to your critics, will be, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."
Yes, there may still be consequences to your past sin, but you will be clean in the eyes of God.
Even now, when someone tells me, "God told me ..." I am careful to see what they are reporting aligns with the Bible, because God's will is never contrary to God's Word, the Bible. On the other hand, when God tells ME something, I know its validity.
My email has a spam filter, but it is not perfect. It allows some spam to sneak by, but also can delete important messages. My desire for you is that you will start listening for and hearing the voice of God for yourself. That way, you avoid the risk of His message to you being filtered out by another person, who you depend on to tell you what God is saying.
I invite you today to start listening for the voice of God. He is speaking. I know that He is, because He has just led me and helped me to prepare this message - just for you.
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it. Isaiah 30:21
