Pray for the one person dies after fire in Choa Chu Kang flat, about 150 residents evacuated.

SINGAPORE - One person died following a fire that broke out in a Choa Chu Kang Housing Board flat in the wee hours of Sept 24.

In a Facebook post, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said firefighters from Bukit Batok Fire Station and Woodlands Fire Station were alerted to a fire at 692A, Choa Chu Kang Crescent at about 6am.

“The fire involved the living room and a bedroom of a unit on the ninth floor. Firefighters had to conduct forcible entry to gain access into the unit.

“The fire was extinguished with a water jet and two Compressed Air Foam backpacks. As a result of the fire, the rest of the unit also sustained heat and smoke damage,” said SCDF.

One person was found inside one of the bedrooms and carried out of the unit by firefighters during the operation.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic, said SCDF, adding that there was no one else inside the affected unit.


About 150 residents were evacuated from the block by police and SCDF as a precautionary measure.

When The Straits Times arrived at about 9am, there were at least eight police cars, three fire trucks and a red rhino seen near the affected block.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Mayor of North West District, Mr Alex Yam, made a post on Facebook shortly after the fire saying the town council would be on site soon to assist.

There were 1,954 fires in 2023, an 8.6 per cent hike from 1,799 cases in 2022. The top two causes were electrical fires and unattended cooking, with 597 and 456 cases respectively, according to SCDF’s annual statistics in 2023.

Additionally, fire injuries fell from 171 to 81, and deaths from eight to three from 2022 to 2023. Two fatal fires took place at flats, SCDF added.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life and the distress caused by the fire in Choa Chu Kang. Let us pray together for the deceased, the evacuated residents, and the entire community affected by this tragedy.

Firstly, we turn to the scriptures for comfort and guidance. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (WEB), it is written, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God."

Let us pray:

*Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, seeking Your comfort and strength during this difficult time. We pray for the soul of the person who lost their life in the fire, asking that You embrace them with Your eternal love and mercy. We also pray for the family and friends who are grieving, that You would surround them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Be their refuge and strength, Lord.*

*We lift up the 150 residents who were evacuated. Lord, we ask that You provide for their immediate needs and help them recover from the trauma of this event. Let Your light shine through the kindness and support of the community around them.*

*Father, we also pray for the firefighters, police officers, and all those involved in the rescue and relief efforts. Protect them and give them the strength and wisdom they need to continue serving the community.*

*Lastly, we pray for the investigation into the cause of the fire. Lord, bring to light any issues that need to be addressed to prevent such tragedies in the future. Guide the authorities and give them wisdom and discernment in their work.*

In all things, Lord, we trust in Your goodness and mercy. We pray these things in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
