THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME
“Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore†was a statement spoken by Dorothy in the story, The Wizard of Oz. Who among us could ever forget this famous line from the opening scenes of the movie? This beautiful story speaks volumes to all of us of our own human desire to be safe and secure in the familiar surroundings of our own homes. As persons who have fallen victim to Satan’s attack on our marriages and other family relationships, we, like Dorothy, look around and wonder, “Where am I?†“How did I get here?â€
In The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was fortunate in her quest because she met some “good†and “wise†people to help her sort out her situation. Who can forget the Tin Man, Scare Crow, Cowardly Lion, the Munchkins and Glinda the Good Witch who helped and directed Dorothy to seek the council of the wise Wizard of Oz? You and I likewise seek help in our confused state from whom ever will listen to us as we relate the story of the breakdown of our marriages. Can these listeners give us wise council? Can these people give us the relief from our pain that we seek? We worry about survival and our children. So many questions that are so overwhelming. Hopefully, like Dorothy, we too will find some wise council.
Our personal situations describe a journey that we must face as we seek the security of “home†and the healing of our heart and our marriage relationship. Our journey is not a simple and quick journey, nor is it without any difficulties. Like Dorothy’s journey to find the Wizard that took many side adventures, our journey to find healing for our hearts, our marriages, and the salvation of our loved ones is not always straight ahead, free from pitfalls or bumps.
So what is the solution? For the Christian, we can seek help from our personal, indwelling counselor, the Holy Spirit. He can guide us and comfort us as we take this journey toward the healing of our hearts and our marriages. For non-Christians, they need to first seek a relationship with God’s One and Only Son, Jesus Christ. With acceptance of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and following baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit, these new Christians will be like us and will have the Holy Spirit to guide them toward the healing they need.
In the scriptures below, Jesus is in the last few days of His ministry before His Crucifixion; He is comforting His followers.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.†John 14:1
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.†John 14:16-17
“When a woman gives birth, she has a hard time, there’s no getting around it. But when the baby is born, there is joy in the birth. This new life in the world wipes out memory of the pain. The sadness you have right now is similar to that pain, but the coming joy is also similar. When I see you again, you’ll be full of joy, and it will be a joy no one can rob from you. You’ll no longer be so full of questions. This is what I want you to do: Ask the Father for whatever is in keeping with the things I’ve revealed to you. Ask in my name, according to my will, and he’ll most certainly give it to you. Your joy will be a river overflowing its banks!†John 16:21-24 (MSG)
Jesus leaves these instructions for each of us: 1) do not be sad; 2) trust in your Heavenly Father and Me; 3) I will send you a Comforter, an Advocate, the Holy Spirit who will reside in you forever; 4) your sadness and pain will become for you a source of great joy; and 5) know that your Heavenly Father will honor requests that are in His will for you if you will just ask in the name of His Son, Jesus. Then your joy will be overflowing!
Such was the confusing situation that Dorothy found herself when she stated, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.†She realized her situation was dire so she went seeking help, much like you and I did when our marriages fell apart. Along the way, she encountered wise friends to assist her in finding her way home. For you and I, we are seeking healing for our hearts, our marriages, and a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ. When Dorothy finally meets the kindly old Wizard of Oz, he redirects her path toward home. Is this not our own greatest desire as we seek a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ? Such a relationship gives us the warm feeling of joy, of freedom, of peace, of home!
At the end of her journey, Dorothy is instructed by Glinda, the Good Witch, to click the heels of her ruby slippers together and repeat…â€There is no place like home†and she would find herself home. Were it that easy to find the much needed solutions to our own journey down our road through marital discord, separation and/or divorce! Yet, even with the heartache and pain, as a Christian, we can have renewal of our relationship, our trust, and our belief in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is with us to guide us home. It is in the security of home that relationships with our spouse, our children and our God find healing. And why? Because these relationships have been rebuilt upon promises and upon covenant; those, dear standers, have been blessed, witnessed, and sealed by our Heavenly Father.
