The Truth about Lying.
The amount of verses that speak against lying are countless, which includes the 9th commandment. Still many see lying as a 'small sin'. Let's see what the scriptures says.

Under God, we have become a new creation and deceitfulness are left for the old self. Lying is not from God.
10. the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine

We see here an interesting grouping of sins. Sexual immoralaties, killing, and lying, as well as anything contrary to the commandments are all in the same list.

Every sin misses the target of righteousness regardless how trivial one percieved the sin has being.

As a society, we tend to categorize lawlessness from mildly unacceptable to outright unforgivable, depending on the crime. We tend to overlook some crimes we deemed minor offenses over those we feel are more serious.
But this is not so in the eyes of our Creator. All sins are the same (see footnote). There's one punishment for all sins - Hell. We have all fallen short but fortunate for us, we have God's grace and the blood of Jesus to wash away our sins (for those who repent). So think twice about condemning someone for a sin while you hold a 'smaller sin' in your heart. Psst! They are all the same.

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.ESV
