THE NIGHT JESUS WAS ARRESTED
When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. And while they were eating, he said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.†Matthew 26:20-21
On Thursday, Jesus told Peter and John to go and make preparations for all the disciples and Jesus to eat the Passover with them in a special home. I hope you will be able to read in your Bible the many events that happened Thursday evening and late into the night before and after Jesus, our Lord was arrested.
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.†Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom.†When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: “‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.†Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will†“I tell you the truth,†Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.†Matthew 26:26-34
The Lord had just told His disciples that they would “all fall away†and forsake him. Jesus even tells the disciples that after His death, He would arise! Have you noticed how our Lord is starting to go through his trial of circumstances by Himself? None of His disciples could comprehend what was transpiring right in front of them, even though many times Jesus shared exactly what was going to happen.
Did the Lord start talking to you about your own marriage problems, before your spouse even spoke the death of your marriage? Are you going to learn from the disciples' mistakes? Will you choose to learn, to seek and follow the Lord in spite of your circumstances? Are you listening to what the Lord is speaking to your heart? Is He telling you that your marriage is going to come back to life again? Will you believe? Are you going to reject and deny your Lord as Peter did, not once, but three times in one night?
May you become sensitive to when the Lord speaks to your heart words of instructions or hope or He may give you a warning. You need to pray daily for your Lord to open your spiritual eyes and ears to hear and see what the Lord wants to speak or reveal to you. Remember to write down, journal and date what He has spoken to your heart. You will need to read these promises in the future.
After Jesus had revealed to the disciples that one of them would betray Him, and that Peter would deny him three times, the Lord spoke hope and encouragement to the disciples in detail in John Chapters 14-16. Then Jesus closed with a very special prayer for His disciples in John 17. You can pray this prayer for you and your family. The Lord spoke powerful words throughout Holy Week to His disciples. Never doubt that the Holy Spirit wants to speak special words to you, such as faith, hope and trust regarding your marriage being resurrected from the dead.
Believe in the power of prayer as you pray for your beloved spouse to listen to the Lord’s voice, being obedient to His instructions, and to His will and way. How would you rate your prayer life? Imagine the Lord choosing you to go with Him to pray for what He was about to suffer! Jesus took His disciples and then He chose His close friends and disciples, Peter, James and John, into the Garden of Gethsemane.
Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.†He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.†Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.†Matthew 26:36-39
Have you not prayed as Jesus wept with such uncontrolled sorrow and grief for your marriage? Have you not prayed that your Lord would take this cup of sorrow away from you? May you truly understand that the Lord Jesus had to suffer the wrath of God against sin. At that moment, the sin of the world was going to be put on Jesus Christ and He became sin for us. (2 Corinthians 5:21) Jesus Christ surrendered His will and way to the Father’s perfect will. The ultimate submission that we all need to do to deepen our relationship is total dependence and surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ moment by moment.
Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?†he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.†He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.†Matthew 26:40-42
Imagine the Lord asking you to pray for Him, and then you fall asleep, as His three disciples did. Peter, James and John were chosen by Jesus to go with Him to pray and, due to emotional fatigue and physical exhaustion, they feel asleep. Can you relate? Do you feel that you are too exhausted to pray long for your spouse and needs? Jesus warned His disciples,“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.†May you and I take this truth and warning very seriously for our own lives every day.
When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!†Matthew 26:43-46
I know for a season of time, I could not pray the words to my Lord: “Yet not as I will Father, but Your will be done in my marriage.†I had not known my Lord as intimately at that time and I feared what my Lord God would have to do to get my husband's attention. I feared God, but Bob was not fearing God at all.
What a day of victory when I surrendered everything to the Lord during my stand. Have you surrendered your heart and life by praying those words yet? Will you take a giant step toward trusting your Lord completely today? When you do, oh, what a peace you will have when you surrender your all to the Lord! What a perfect time to do this during Holy Week. Lord, not my will, but Your will be done in my life and marriage!
