With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it.
—Romans 9:1 NLT
As we have seen over the last several days, our assurance of the truth about the message of Jesus is the Holy Spirit. In his letter to the Roman Christians, Paul is sharing the most personal and convicting things in his heart about his love for the Jewish people, about the inclusion of Gentiles in the people of God, and about the message of Jesus for all people. He is not saying these things lightly. He is not exaggerating his deep emotions or the importance of these truths to his heart. Jesus is a witness to what he says, and he is willing to own his words before the Lord. The Holy Spirit is not only behind the inspiration of these words but also confirms the truth of them. The message of Jesus — and its truth, timeliness, and power to touch people's hearts — have their confirmation in the Holy Spirit.
Righteous Father, may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be pleasing to you. Please shape my words and my thoughts through the Holy Spirit who is at work in me and also in my thoughts and words. I want to speak with clarity, simplicity, honesty, conviction, and love. Without the Spirit's work in my heart and mind, I can't do so. Please make it so, I pray, in Jesus' name. Amen.
