Nehemiah 5:18 :
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

Commentary on this verse:
5:14-19 Those who truly fear God, will not dare to do any thing cruel or unjust. Let all who are in public places remember that they are so placed to do good, not to enrich themselves. Nehemiah mentions it to God in prayer, not as if he had merited any favour from God, but to show that he depended upon God only, to make up to him what he had lost and laid out for His honour. Nehemiah evidently spake and acted as one that knew himself to be a sinner. He did not mean to claim a reward as of debt, but in the manner that the Lord rewards a cup of cold water given to a disciple for his sake. The fear and love of God in the heart, and true love of the brethren, will lead to every good work. These are proper evidences of justifying faith; and our reconciled God will look upon persons of this character for good, according to all they have done for His people.

Our prayer:
Gracious Heavenly Father, mold our hearts to mirror Your own. Teach us to lead not from a throne, but from the foot-washing basin. Grant us the courage to serve generously, to love selflessly, and to reflect Your light in every act of kindness. in Jesus‘ name we pray. Amen.

Tang Wei Ping, thank you for bringing this verse and commentary to our attention. Let us consider Nehemiah 5:18 and the surrounding passage together.

Nehemiah, despite his influential position, did not exploit his people. Instead, he worked diligently for their good, feeding many at his own table. He did not demand the governor's provisions, choosing instead to serve rather than be served. This is a powerful example of godly leadership.

Firstly, let's consider the scripture:
"That which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days all sorts of wine in abundance. Yet for all this, I didn’t demand the governor’s food allowance, because the bondage was heavy on this people." (Nehemiah 5:18, WEB)

Nehemiah understood that the fear and love of God led him to act justly and compassionately. He knew that his leadership role was not for personal gain but for the good of those he served. This heart of service is a reflection of God's own heart.

We encourage you, just as Nehemiah did, to lead with humility and compassion. Jesus himself said, "But whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant, even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28, WEB)

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Nehemiah, who led with a heart of service and compassion. Help us to emulate his example, to lead with humility, and to love as You love. Remind us, Lord, that true greatness is found in serving others, just as Jesus demonstrated. Let the fear and love of You fill our hearts, guiding us to act justly and compassionately in all that we do. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to You, and it is in His name that we pray. Amen.

Dear friend, let's reflect on Nehemiah 5:18 together. Nehemiah, despite being in a position of power, chose not to exploit his people. Instead, he worked tirelessly for their good, even feeding many at his own table. He didn't demand the governor's provisions, opting to serve rather than be served. This is a beautiful example of godly leadership.

Let's pray:

Father, we thank You for the example of Nehemiah. Help us to lead with humility and compassion, just as he did. Remind us, Lord, that true greatness is found in serving others, as Jesus demonstrated. Fill our hearts with the fear and love of You, guiding us to act justly and compassionately in all that we do. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Heavenly Father,

We lift up this prayer, inspired by Nehemiah’s example of humble leadership and selfless service. Mold our hearts to reflect Your love, teaching us to lead not for personal gain but in service to others and for Your glory. May we be filled with compassion, humility, and a spirit of generosity.

1. **For a Heart of Service and Humility:**
Lord, guide us to lead from a place of humility, considering others’ needs above our own. Help us to serve without expecting anything in return, that we may reflect Your character in all we do.
*“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”* – Mark 10:45

2. **For Generosity and Compassion in Every Circumstance:**
May we be courageous in our generosity, like Nehemiah, giving willingly for the good of others, especially when burdens are heavy. Let our acts of kindness be a light to those around us, reflecting Your love and grace.
*“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.”* – Luke 6:38

3. **For Faith that Trusts in God’s Provision:**
Father, strengthen our faith, that we may depend on You to provide and to meet our needs as we serve others. May we be reminded of Your promises and trust You to replenish all we offer in Your name.
*“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”* – Philippians 4:19

4. **For a Spirit that Honors and Reveres God Above All:**
Let our love for You guide every action, knowing that true service comes from a heart that reveres and honors You. May our work be a testament to Your goodness, and may our lives bear witness to Your love.
*“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”* – Colossians 3:17

Lord, we offer our lives in humble service, desiring only to bring glory to Your name. Teach us to love as You love, to give as You give, and to serve as You serve.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. If your request was answered, please post a praise report and let us all know. If your request does not seem to have been answered, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. We all hope that our prayers are answered in the way that we want. Sometimes we believe that God is not answering our prayers because we do not see what we expect. In these cases, we should persist in prayer and determine how God is answering our prayer. May God bless you as you continue to seek him through his son, Jesus Christ.
