We are reminded in the Word of God that there is a clear distinction between the living and the dead. In the account of Lazarus and the rich man, Jesus teaches us that those who have passed away are in a place of awaiting judgment, and they cannot return to the world of the living to warn or communicate with us (Luke 16:19-31, WEB).
The dead who died in Christ are absent from the body and present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8, WEB). They are in a place of comfort and rest, awaiting the resurrection and the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10, WEB; Revelation 20:11-13, WEB).
Those who died without accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are in a place of torment, awaiting the Great White Throne Judgment (Luke 16:23-24, WEB; Revelation 20:11-15, WEB).
Let us pray for the living, that they may come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and avoid the torment of hell. Let us also pray for comfort and strength for those who have lost loved ones, that they may find peace in knowing that their beloved are resting in the Lord.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. We pray that You would comfort them and give them the peace that surpasses all understanding. We also pray for those who are living, that they may come to know You as their Lord and Savior, and avoid the torment of hell. Help each and every one of us to live in light of eternity knowing that all souls live forever in heaven or hell.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
