From birth to death, life is full of emotional markers that bring tears of joy or tears of heartache. We find ourselves crying at the birth of a child, on the day of a wedding, at the time of a death, or at the delivery of any sad or wonderful occasion. We are faced with tremendous turmoil and the pain seems unbearable as tears of sorrow and suffering flow down our cheeks. We are overcome with great joy or happiness and we find ourselves trying to hold back the little drops of emotion. Whether it is because of happiness or because of heartache, tears find their place on the faces of everyone some time throughout life. Crying is inescapable. It is a definite event of life and has a cleansing effect on the soul. When we cry, we show others we feel and we care. We have compassion or empathy. With these feelings, we build up a natural energy. As the tears begin to flow, we find release from this energy. The tears may be sweet or the tears may be bitter, but nonetheless, we cry.
Imagine how life would be if we were never able to shed a tear? God thinks so highly of the tears that we shed that He puts them in a bottle and records them in His book! (Psalm 56:8) Tears are truly a language that touches the heart of God and the Bible is full of people who cried. Jeremiah was known as “the weeping prophet†and Hezekiah wept to God numerous times and God responded to his tears. (Isaiah 38:5 ; II Kings 20:5) Job was another person who found himself pouring out his heart through tears. (Job 16:20) And, no one ever wept and wailed before God like the Psalmist, David, as the book of Psalms is full of his cries. In the beginning, we find David crying out for mercy and deliverance and, after God hears and answers him, we find David crying out words of praise and worship because God has delivered him. What has become known as the shortest verse in the Bible simply states, “Jesus weptâ€. (John 11:35) Jesus Christ, the ultimate example, showed compassion and suffering with tears. It was on the cross that Jesus shed his last tear when He cried, “It is finishedâ€.
One day there will be no more tears. Until then, we cry. We shed tears that are created in the depths of our heart and find their way to the heart of God, Himself. We have ways of remembering our tears and some of us choose to give them life through words while others simply allow the air we breathe to mold our tears into memories.Written words are my way of sharing the emotional markers in my life where tears have left a trace of happiness or heartache. It is my hope that, in reading this, you will relate to the thoughts that my mind has created by listening to the cries of my heart. Thank you and God bless!
Psalm 30:5
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
