[Jesus continued his instructions to the apostles when he sent them out:] "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
"Don't take any money in your money belts — no gold, silver, or even copper coins. Don't carry a traveler's bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don't hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed."
—Matthew 10:8-10 NLT
Jesus gives his apostles authority! This is not just power; it is also authority to use that power. But they must constantly realize that this authority does not rest in themselves but in the one from whom they received it. Not only that, they are not to use this authority for their own privilege but to bless others. In fact, Jesus gives them everything freely, so they must share with others as he has done with them. So Jesus sends his apostles out on a missionary journey without even the most basic elements of a traveler — no money, no luggage, no change of clothes or sandals, and no extra anything. They are to depend on those they serve and on God to provide. This missionary journey must be accomplished and soon! There's no time for encumbering equipment, and there must never be any pretense. The authority and provision come from the Lord!
Generous and faithful Father, thank you for your provision of grace, food, protection, and capability. I recognize that the significance of my ministry lies not in me, nor in my ability, but in your providential grace and power. To you goes all the glory for any good that I have done or ever will do. You are my inspiration, power, motivation, and hero. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
