Key Passage
"Heal sick people. Give dead people life again. Heal those people that have leprosy. Force demons to leave people. I give you these powers freely. So help other people freely. Don't carry any money with you—gold or silver or copper. Don't carry a bag. Take for your trip only the clothes and shoes you are wearing. Don't take a walking stick. A worker should be given the things he needs."
— Matthew 10:8-10 ERV (Read Full Text)
Key Thought
Jesus gave his disciples authority! This is not just power; it is also authority to use that power. But they must constantly realize that this authority does not rest in themselves, but in the one from whom they received it. Not only that, they are not to use this authority for their own privilege but to bless others. In fact, Jesus gave them everything freely, so they must share with others as he has done with them. So Jesus sends his apostles out on a missionary journey without even the most basic elements of a traveler—no money, no luggage, no change of clothes, and no extra. They are to depend upon those they serve and upon God to provide. This missionary journey must be accomplished and soon! No time for encumbering equipment or pretense. The authority and provision come from the Lord!
Prayer
Generous and Faithful Father, thank you for your provision of grace, food, protection, and capability. I recognize that the significance of my ministry lies not in me, nor in my ability, but in your providential grace and power. To you goes all the glory for any good that I have done or ever will do. You are my inspiration, power, motivation, and hero. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
Related Scriptures
The elders who lead the church in a good way should receive double honor. This is especially true for those elders who do the work of counseling and teaching. Why? Because the Scriptures say, "When a work animal is doing the work of separating grain, don't cover its mouth {and stop it from eating the grain}." And the Scriptures also say, "A worker should be given his pay."
— 1 Timothy 5:17-18
Jesus continued teaching. Jesus said, "Be careful of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around wearing clothes that look important. And they love for people to show respect to them in the market places. They love to get the most important seats in the synagogues. And they love to get the most important seats at the feasts. They are mean to widows and steal their homes. Then they try to make themselves look good by saying long prayers. God will punish them very much."
