Women giving birth in tiny huts occasionally assisted by traditional midwives and often by themselves is a common sight in my rural village in western Kenya. Tucked along the shores of Lake Victoria and on the equator hundreds of miles away from the capital, glimpses of healthcare centers are a rare find. Healthcare professionals in this side of the country are few and work in under-funded facilities that lack the very definition of a proper healthcare facility. Growing up, my mother’s birth struggles, especially of my younger siblings, irked the desire to want to be an agent of change in my community. I learned the role of different healthcare specialists in primary school and was particularly impressed by the monumental work nurses do to help people on their road to recovery. That they also assist expectant women and reduce mother and the child mortality rate was a mind pleaser of sorts.. It is then that I made up my mind to take up nursing as a profession in the future. I am glad this future is yonder.
Nursing is a calling that I have been keen to listen to since my childhood days Despite the stressors of life that I faced in my long treks to and from school, becoming a nurse at the end has been my motivating factor. My family lives on a tight budget—less than a dollar a day—something that greatly undermined my chances in school as I would be sent away for school fees regularly. COVID-19 was a blow to my already wave-buffeted self and significantly undermined my settlement in school. Despite the hardships, my dedication paid off. My high school, an inaugural mixed-day school in the vicinity, had, before 2020, been out of school for far too long due to the pandemic, not recorded any university entry grade in the 3 years of its existence. I was glad to be the first and the only one to break this jinx. This little-big milestone has been a blockbuster to my childhood dreams and I strongly believe it will be a stepping stone to a better future for the expectant moms in my village and country at large.
I am a self-driven individual, passionate about leadership, community service, and change. In my high school, I was privileged to serve as the school’s head prefect, besides helping out as the team first aid servicewoman for the soccer team. As the head prefect, I have gained the values of respect for others, ethical leadership, and integrity. Most importantly, I have been thoroughly furnished to become a servant leader and learned to listen to my peers, seniors, and juniors. My leadership experience has been a steep learning curve for skills crucial for service to humanity where I currently attend Elderly and Children's homes with underlying conditions/ailments at Nyatir Medicare and ultimately self-development.
I joined the school’s first aid team to give perspective to my prospects in nursing. I wanted to feel what it means to help patients prepare for the great task ahead. My experiences as the soccer team first aid servicewoman have shaped my attitude toward service. I am more patient, humble, and ready to listen. I am also more empathetic, sympathetic, and keen. I believe these accruals will be fundamental in molding me to become the nurse I have yearned to be and with the accruals from your institution, will model me into the ultimate 21st-century nurse ready to serve the increasingly dynamic world of healthcare.
My dream is to come back to my small village and country to help expectant mothers and fight diseases that have been rummaged through the ruins of its fabric. Diseases like HIV and AIDS have been the worst nightmare for the region and I would like to play an active professional role in helping mitigate its roaring effects. I would also like to empower young girls whose ambitions are choked by early pregnancies, economic hurdles, and lack of opportunities.I would like to be their voice of hope and inspiration for their future by using my skills and expertise to counsel, empower, and motivate.
I come with a range of skills that I believe will reinforce my ability to make a competent nursing scholar in your reputable institution. More specifically, I have built on my research and social skills during my four-year stay in high school. These skills will be useful for my scholarly and social endeavors. I have a passion for research, having played a crucial role in the formation of a research club in my high school. During school holidays, I took part in mentorship programs, especially for the young girls in primary schools in the village, from where I gained self-confidence and the all-important value of service to humanity. I am also passionate about sports, particularly netball and soccer. I played competitive soccer in primary school and high school. Given a chance, I would wish to join the university’s soccer team and build on these skills. I would love to try out new sports like Basketball as well. Sports make me whole and I recognize the indispensable role they play in keeping us fit and healthy. I am also an ardent reader and would love to satisfy this passion given the chance to become part of the institution’s family.
I cannot wait to enjoy the beauty of diversity and see my dreams come true with you.
I would be graciously grateful if granted the opportunity.
Warm regards,
Belivia
