SHOULD A CHRISTIAN CELEBRATE ST PATRICK’S DAY?
By Bibleman
Saint Patrick was born in Wales in A.D. 385. He was a pagan until he converted over to Catholicism. After his conversion he went to Gaul, France to study Catholicism for 12 years. As an ordained Bishop of the Catholic Church he was commissioned to convert the pagans of Ireland to Catholicism. He was credited for driving all the snakes (or pagans) out of Ireland. He established monasteries as well as Catholic schools and churches in Ireland for the purpose of converting Ireland to Roman Catholicism.
THE IRISH INQUISITION
Many believe that St. Patrick, with the blessing of the Pope, initiated an Irish Inquisition to either convert all the citizens of the land to Catholicism or destroy them. There are claims that while on his campaign to Catholicize Ireland that he murdered all pagans who refused to be converted. Some sources say that St. Patrick was in charge of a brutal Roman Catholic Inquisition that took the lives of some six million Irish/Celtic citizens who refused to convert. Story has it that anyone who refused to convert to Catholicism was either tied up at stakes and left to starve to death or bound and thrown into the sea. How many of these Irish/Celtic citizens were God-fearing Christians who refused to bow to Rome? I am quite sure that not every one in the British Isles was a pagan nor did they all deserve such a murderous fate.
ST PATRICH—THE FALSE GOD
To the pagans St. Patrick is the legendary green man who roams the forests and lush meadows of the British Isles infusing the spirit of life in all the plants and trees during the spring equinox. Sometimes he is even depicted as a horned man peering out from under a sacred oak.
To the Catholic Church, St. Patrick is considered a patron saint. A patron saint, to the Catholics, is like a god in heaven who has special powers given to him to be able to protect a person, an institution or a certain group of people. Is St. Patrick now a god who is in heaven overlooking Ireland?
The Bible does not teach that a dead saint has god-like powers in heaven. Heaven is a resting place for the souls of the saved not a playground for those who want to be a god. It is idolatrous to turn to any saint living or dead for your provision and security. We are to turn only to the Lord God and seek Him to meet all of our daily needs (Gen. 22:14; 1 Pet. 5:7).
THE PAGAN CONNECTION
Did St. Patrick actually obliterate paganism from Ireland or did he merely create a new Celtic Catholicism? It seems that St. Patrick’s Day is popular with many pagans. The spring equinox that pagans celebrate falls near March 17th so many of them celebrate that on St. Patrick’s Day. The Druids like to refer to this time as the Festival of Trees while other pagans refer to it as The Feast of Ostara, the fertility goddess. These pagan festivals celebrate the rebirth of nature when everything springs back to life. March 17th is also the day that Osiris, the Green Man or solar deity of Egyptian mythology, was killed. Beer drinking was considered sacred in ancient Egypt and was drank to celebrate the death of Osiris which also coincides with the Roman festival Bacchanalia. St. Patrick’s Day is the day on which many pagans choose a god or goddess to celebrate from ancient Ireland.
PAGAN SYMBOLS
The symbols used during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are resplendent with paganism. Wiccans claim that all of the symbols associated with St. Patrick’s Day are rooted in witchcraft and goddess worship. They, in fact, claim that all the symbols used to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day are of pagan origin. The use of any pagan or occult symbol that belongs to Satan and that is used in witchcraft or goddess worship can bring evil spirits and dark powers into your home to adversely affect your life.
THE SHAMROCK
The shamrock symbol was supposed to have been chosen by St Patrick to represent the Trinitarian view of God. Wiccans claim they smile when they see deceived Christians or Catholics wearing their goddess symbol, the shamrock. The shamrock, or three-leafed clover, was known as a Seamroy by the earth-worshipping pagans of Ireland. This Seamroy, to demon worship cults, represented the three faces of the goddess found in the moon. In witchcraft the shamrock is a hex symbol and an ancient pagan symbol associated with goddess worship.
THE LEPRECHAUN
Leprechauns are the little green colored men with withered faces who like to stir up mischief and trouble for people. They were also supposed to be possessors of a pot of gold and the one who would pinch anyone who did not wear green. Is the Leprechaun just an old Irish fairy tale or does it represent something to pagans. This little “green man†is really a pagan idol used to commemorate the celebration of the regeneration of nature by the pagans during the spring. The Leprechaun is known by pagans as an elemental or nature spirit and is really a true representation of an evil spirit or demon. These Leprechaun-looking demons have been known to foster communication with people. Learn to avoid all such demonic impersonators. This shows just how pagan and demonic St. Patrick’s Day really is!
THE COLOR GREEN
Why was the color green chosen to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? That’s very simple: green is the perfect color to celebrate the rebirth of spring. Pagans believe that if you do not wear green on this day that the evil spirits will pinch you.
THE CELTIC CROSS
The Celtic cross is nothing but a sun-worshipping symbol with a cross in it. This is the perfect symbol to represent a merger between ancient pagan sun-worshipping cults and Roman Catholicism. It is clear that St. Patrick choose this symbol to represent this Roman Catholic/Pagan merger. The Bible says that even a small amount of error merged with truth corrupts the whole thing.
IRISH GOOD LUCK CHARMS
The dictionary describes luck as a force that operates in a person’s life to shape events, help them become successful, determine circumstances, and provide favorable opportunities. Irish talismans and amulets which are called lucky charms are believed to bring good luck to those who wear them. A former witch claims that the word luck is derived from the word Lucifer. If this is true then the one who seeks good luck from such things is inviting the devil, the god of forces, into his life to help him be successful. It is also known that clinging demons will attach themselves to lucky charms. Do you want to have a demon in your pocket or hanging on your neck?
Christians are not to leave anything to blind chance or believe in superstitious pagan notions that could contain elements of spiritual danger. Put your faith in God and seek His favor and blessings (Ps. 115:14-16). Obedience and righteous living will always bring God’s favor and blessings into our life. In our conversations with others we should invoke the blessings of God upon them by saying “God bless you.†If you say “good luck†to them you are either leaving them to mere chance or invoking an unknown force, that could be demonic, to operate in their life.
HOLY DAY OR SECULAR HOLIDAY?
Today this Catholic holy day has become just another secular holiday characterized by drinking, revelry and debauchery. This holiday festival has now become a sinful time to indulge in drunkenness and in excess—a time to celebrate pagan customs and traditions. Because of the assimilation of druidic paganism and witchcraft with Catholicism this holiday is not a holy day to be celebrated by Christians. I believe this holiday is really the old pagan spring festival know as Ostara given a new name to conceal its true identity. All pagan customs and traditions are to be avoided even though they may have been “Christianized†or given a new name. Satan has found cleaver ways to “Christianize†many pagan holidays and pawn them off as holy days. The only true holy days that God has asked people to observe are those listed in Leviticus 23. We should honor God and show our love to Him by celebrating these instead of all the “Christianized†holidays that have pagan roots and that are celebrated with secular festivities (2 Cor. 6:14). Keep the true holy days God has ordained and given to us in the Bible and shun all the Catholic/pagan holidays. How can any Catholic holiday that is deeply immersed in paganism exalt, honor or glorify God? How can any secular festival or Catholic holy day such as St. Patrick’s Day, that is celebrated with drunkenness and partying, glorify God? Our only desire should be to please, honor, love, and glorify our Great God and Savior. Place your affections upon Christ and serve Him in holiness. Avoid all secular holidays and Catholic holy days that are of pagan origin and all the demons that promote them.
Heavenly Father, forgive me for all my participation in holidays and festivities that are man-made and of pagan origin or which are infused with paganism. Help me to observe and celebrate only those days You have ordained in the Bible. Help me to honor and glorify Christ by celebrating the holy days of the Bible, as instructed in the Word of God, in Jesus name, amen
