We are truly saddened to hear about the struggle your family is facing with alcohol, and we are here to intercede and pray with you and encourage you. We commend you for reaching out and seeking help, this is a hard but necessary step. Substance abuse and addiction is immoral and harmful, we must remember what the apostle Paul wrote, do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 WEB)
Firstly let's discuss the elephant in the room here. The biblical role of a husband is to act as the spiritual leader of the household. Therefore, a husband must be a Christian Believer, if your husband is not then we must begin to pray that he becomes one and that he begins to fulfill his assigned role. The husband is to be a representation of Jesus Christ in the household, to have a family that honors God, and to have a wife and children who submit to him. The wife is a representation of the church in the household. (Ephesians 5:22-33 WEB) We must have faith that Jesus Christ can change anyone, your husband, daughter, and son need to be married to other Christian believers and the same goes for both of your brothers and two nephews. If they are not, then the road to Demascus needs to be prepared for them.
Alcohol is a depressant, it depresses the central nervous system and slows down thought processes, emotion, and reactions. It also affects the brain's pleasure and reward center, this is where addiction occurs. Drinking alcohol to excess leading to drunkness is a sin. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18 WEB) Not only is it illegal, immoral, and irresponsible to indulge in this, but it's a sin. We must realize that all sin is a choice. We choose to sin, we choose to drink alcohol, and we choose to drink alcohol to excess.
The bible tells us to honor our father and mother, so that it may be well with us and we may live long on the earth. (Ephesians 6:2-3 WEB) Your children and nephews must realize that what they are doing is not honoring to their parents or to God. If they cannot honor their parents, how can they honor God? Let's specifically address your daughter, becoming ugly when she drinks. The bible tells us that physical beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:30 WEB) Your daughter must realize that her behavior is not only harmful to herself and others, but it is not glorifying to God. Not to mention she is not honoring her parents, you, and especially her father. If your daughter is not a Christian believer then the time has come for her to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and to ask God to forgive her of her sins. Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, and your daughter is no exception. (Romans 10:13 WEB)
You and your family can be set free from the bondage of alcoholism, but it starts with the acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your lives. It is only then that he will set you free. "If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:36 WEB) This is because Jesus Christ is the only way to God the Father and to salvation. (John 14:6 WEB)
Heavenly Father,
We come before you today, lifting up this family that is struggling with the bondage of alcoholism. We pray that you would intervene and set them free from this addiction. We pray for the husband, daughter, son, two brothers, and two nephews, that they would come to know you as their Lord and Savior, and that you would give them the strength to overcome this struggle. We pray that they would honor their parents, and that they would live lives that are glorifying to you. We pray that you would heal this family, and that you would restore them to a right relationship with you. We pray for the daughter, that she would see herself as you see her, and that she would be a woman who fears the Lord. We pray for the husband, that he would be the spiritual leader of the household, and that he would lead his family in the ways of the Lord. We pray for the son, that he would honor his parents, and that he would live a life that is pleasing to you. We pray for the brothers and nephews, that they would come to know you, and that they would live lives that are glorifying to you. We pray that you would heal this family, and that you would restore them to a right relationship with you and each other. We pray that you would give them the strength to overcome this addiction, and that you would set them free from the bondage of alcoholism. We pray that you would give them a hope and a future, and that they would live lives that are pleasing to you. We pray that you would give them the courage and strength to share their testimony with others and to turn from their old lives. We pray that you would give them the strength to live lives that are glorifying to you. We ask all of this in Jesus Christ's name and for his sake, Amen.
