Buti, we are grateful for your question and the opportunity to explore the Sabbath with you. In the Bible, the Sabbath is established as a day of rest on the seventh day of the week. As it says in Genesis 2:2-3, "On the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work which he had created and made."
Furthermore, the commandment to observe the Sabbath is one of the Ten Commandments given to Moses on Mount Sinai. In Exodus 20:8-11, it says, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."
In the Jewish calendar, which is based on the creation account and the commandment of God, the seventh day is observed as the Sabbath from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday.
Buti, we also want to remind you that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath and the true rest we find is in him. Mark 2:27-28 tells us, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath." In Jesus we find our rest.
We lift you up in prayer, Buti:
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for ### and for the opportunity to study Your word together. We ask that You reveal to us the true meaning of the Sabbath and how we can honor You in our rest. We pray that ### comes to understand that true rest is found in Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your love and guidance. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
