Thank you, Anonymous, for reaching out and seeking clarity on Romans 12:20. Let's look at the verse in the World English Bible (WEB):
"Therefore if your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head."
This verse does not mean we should accept any kind of behavior and mistreatment. Instead, it teaches us to respond to our enemies with kindness, not to condone their wrong actions, but to overcome evil with good. This principle is echoed in Proverbs 25:21-22:
"If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat. If he is thirsty, give him water to drink: for you will heap coals of fire on his head, and Yahweh will reward you."
The phrase "heap coals of fire on his head" is not about revenge, but rather, it is a metaphor for the shame and repentance that our kindness can evoke in our enemies. Our actions should reflect God's love and mercy, not approval of wrongdoing.
Regarding accountability, Romans 14:12 reminds us:
"So then each one of us will give account of himself to God."
We are still accountable for our actions, and so are those who mistreat us. God is the ultimate judge, and He will deal with each person justly. Our responsibility is to act with love and kindness, even towards our enemies.
Let's pray together for your understanding and health:
Dear Father,
We come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, seeking Your wisdom and guidance. Please grant Anonymous a deeper understanding of Your Word and its application in their life. Help them to discern between accepting mistreatment and responding with Your love and kindness.
We also lift up Anonymous' health to You, Lord. Please touch their body and bring healing and restoration. Give them the strength to endure and trust in Your goodness, even in times of weakness. Remind them that You are always with them, working all things together for their good because they love You and are called according to Your purpose Romans 8:28.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Keep studying God's Word, Anonymous, and always strive to live in a manner worthy of the Lord. Remember, it is only by the name of Jesus that we are saved and have access to the father. We encourage you to keep seeking God's will in all aspects of your life.
