“REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY” (Ex. 20:8) !
By Bibleman
This study will teach you how to enjoy the true seventh-day Sabbath that God commanded us to keep holy. The Sabbath day should be the most special day of every week. This is the day we should look forward to with great delight and expectancy! God intended for this to be our most refreshing and enjoyable day of the week. Learn how this special day that was consecrated and blessed by God can and should be your most rewarding day of the week!
A TIME TO REST
“Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: (Ex. 35:2).”
Everyone needs a day to rest from all their physical labor and from the stress, complexities and rigors of everyday life. For this reason did our Heavenly Father give us this wonderful day. This special day is our gift from God to ensure we get the restoration we need. God chose this day from the beginning as the day in which all of mankind should receive rest. The seventh-day is the day Almighty God rested from all His work of creation, therefore He established and consecrated this day for man to cease from all physical labor and regular work. Under the New Covenant Christians are admonished to enter into God’s Sabbath rest. The seventh-day Sabbath, instituted by God, is still applicable for all Christians today (Heb 4:1-11). We are to do everything we can to make sure we keep the Sabbath holy and not harden our hearts against this commandment like those of old who suffered much hardship for their disobedience (Heb. 4:11).
A TIME TO SANCTIFY!
“Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee (Deut. 5:12)”
God commands us to keep the Sabbath day holy and to sanctify it (Deut. 5:12). The Sabbath is to be honored as a sacred and holy day in which we dedicate ourselves to the Lord. We are to sanctify the seventh day and not the first day of the week or any day of our own choosing (Ezek. 44:24). The seventh day is the day we keep holy to ourselves because God established and consecrated this day for our rest and spiritual enrichment. Through out the Bible we find that the Sabbath day is the day God especially desires and commands that we keep holy by resting, worshiping Him, and honoring Him. We sanctify this important day by: 1. bearing no burdens and doing no physical work (Jer. 17:21-24). 2. conducting no commerce of any kind such as buying and selling (Neh. 10:31). 3. By not working any of our servants, employees, relatives, or animals (Ex. 20:10). 4. By not seeking and doing your own worldly pleasures such as watching or playing sports, going fishing or hunting, watching secular programs, games or hobbies, etc. (Isa. 58:13). The things God wants us to do on the Sabbath is to rest (Ex. 20:10), honor God and delight yourself in Him rather than seeking worldly pleasures (Isa. 58:13), worship God in your home or in Church (Isa. 56:2-7) and celebrate the Sabbath by remembering that God is our healer, deliverer, redeemer, and sanctifier (Ex. 31:13).
It is our responsibility to sanctify this special day by keeping it holy. We must take heed not to pollute or defile the Sabbath by doing anything that God forbids us to do on this day. This holy day has been blessed by God above all other days, therefore, we should honor God by keeping it holy. In the past those who have defiled and profaned the Sabbath have come under many curses, hardships, and even death (Ex. 31:14; Num. 15:32-36; Neh. 13:15-19,22).
A TIME TO CELEBRATE
“This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Ps. 118:24)
The Sabbath should be for all of God’s people a day of celebration. God wants us to make this day a happy and joyful day of delight (Isa. 56:7). This is a day given to us by God to richly enjoy. This is the day God has sanctified and designated for us to celebrate our love for Him and for all He has done for us perpetually throughout all eternity (Isa. 66:23)! Every minute of this day should be delightful, refreshing, relaxing, rewarding, stimulating, enriching, enlightening, rejuvenating, joyful, jubilant, and fulfilling! It is a day of physical and spiritual restoration in the Lord! For this reason the Sabbath should always be our favorite day…the day we look forward to with great expectancy and jubilation! God desires for us to delight ourselves in Him and honor Him and Him alone on this wonderful day. He wants us to enjoy this day and relish the time we spend with Him. For the Christian who has a covenant relationship with Father God, the Sabbath should be the most delightful and enjoyable day of every week (Isa. 58:13). King David wrote Psalm 92 to show how we should celebrate the Sabbath day. We have a wonderful opportunity to celebrate God’s goodness, His lovingkindness, His power to deliver, His justice, His holiness and righteousness, His majestic greatness and His faithfulness to us. It’s a special time to consider how the Lord has met our needs and enabled us to be happy, successful and fruitful in all our endeavors. We should rejoice and be jubilant on the Sabbath day! It’s a glorious day to express our thankfulness for all He has done for us as we worship Him triumphantly with musical instruments and by singing praises to His holy name! Avoid your own worldly pursuits and pleasures on the Sabbath and make this sanctified day a time to give God all the glory, honor and praise that is due to Him. It is a joyous time to celebrate everything God created and for the things he has given to us for our enjoyment. The Sabbath is an excellent time to celebrate our own spiritual birthday and sanctification in Christ. The Sabbath is the day we should celebrate our health and wholeness which comes only from God. We can celebrate our heritage in the Lord. There is no better time to celebrate what we have from God and to thank Him and worship Him and honor Him on His holy day. Thank Him for this holy Sabbath day He has given to all mankind. It’s a delightful time to celebrate our relationship with God (Isa. 58:13). Many people celebrate birthdays and holidays so why not celebrate God on this magnificent day and make it a time to joyfully worship Him and thank Him for all He has done for you (Isa. 56:7; 58:13)!
A TIME TO HONOR GOD
“If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight…and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord…(Isa. 58:13,14).”
The Jewish people view the Sabbath as one of their most important spiritual treasures from God. They believe it is the most important commandment in all of Judaism. I admonish you to also honor God, as the Jewish people do, by observing His Sabbath day. Perhaps you honor God by paying your tithes but do you honor Him by keeping His Sabbath day holy? You might ask: “Doesn’t keeping Sunday count in the same way?” Let me ask you: Would God be pleased if you decided to give Him 7% instead of 10% of your income? The answer of coarse is no! Neither would God be pleased with your disobedience if you chose to keep Sunday instead of His sanctified Sabbath day. We honor God when we obey God. Why dishonor God by keeping a pagan Sabbath that the Roman Catholic Church adopted from ancient paganism? The Bible commands us to come out of Babylonian paganism and stop observing pagan customs and man-made doctrines. Stop honoring a day dedicated to the sun-god, Lucifer and start keeping God’s true, sanctified, seventh-day Sabbath. We honor God by obeying Him and keeping holy the day He has sanctified and designated for all eternity (Lev. 19:30; 26:2)! If you honor God by keeping His Sabbath day holy and refrain from all all your worldly pursuits and pleasures the Lord will bless you in a mighty way (Isa. 58:14). God will bless you and give you the desires of your heart if you delight yourself in him and honor him on his special day (Ps. 37:4, 5)!
A TIME TO WORSHIP GOD
“And he (Paul) reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks (Acts 18:4).”
Throughout the Bible God makes it plain that He desires for us to worship Him on the Sabbath day. We are to follow the example of Jesus who went into the houses of prayer and worship to teach on the Sabbath day (Lk. 4:16; 6:6). The apostles taught and preached in the synagogues on every Sabbath day (Acts 17:2; 18:4). Both Jews and Gentiles, during the early church era, worshipped on the Sabbath day (Acts 13:42, 44). The Sabbath day is the day given by God for us to assemble for worship. It is the day He designated for us to be spiritually enriched with the word of God. It is a day for prayer and a day to receive healing and restoration. If you are a sunday worshiper you can please the heart of God, today, by throwing off the shackles of Babylon and its pagan Sabbath for the true God-given, holy Sabbath (Rom. 14:6; Heb. 4:11; Rev. 18:4). Choose the day God sanctified and commanded for us to keep holy (Ex. 20:10). God desires for you to enter into a covenant relationship with Him by entering into His rest (Heb. 4:1-11). The true Sabbath day is an everlasting covenant of restoration and enrichment given to us by God (Ex. 31:6; 35:2; 1 Chr. 9:32). The Sabbath covenant has not been abolished but is eternal and perpetual and will be observed throughout eternity (Isa. 66:23)!
