Isaiah 7:20 :
In the same day shall the Lord shave with a rasor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard.
Commentary on this verse:
In the context of Judah during the reign of King Ahaz, a time marked by doubt and impending threats from foreign powers, the prophecy in this verse presents a stark and vivid imagery of impending judgment. The Lord declares that He will employ Assyria as an instrument of humiliation against Judah, likening it to a barber using a razor to completely shave one’s hair. This indicates not only physical devastation but a profound spiritual degradation as well, where reliance on human alliances instead of faith in God leads to severe consequences.
The significance of the razor is twofold: it symbolizes both physical conquest and the deeper spiritual implications of God’s removal of peace and security from His people. Ahaz's political maneuvers to ally with Assyria for protection ultimately result in a backfire, as God uses that very alliance to bring judgment. This serves as a reminder that trusting in worldly powers over divine providence yields disastrous results, echoing broader themes of faith and idolatry present throughout scripture. This warning is crucial not just as a historical account but as a continual lesson for believers about reliance on God alone.
Prayer for Isaiah 7:14 :
“Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.trusting in worldly powers over divine providence yields disastrous results.
“Praying through Isaiah 7:14:
Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, You alone are wise and good. Thank You for the truths that are contained in Your holy Word and that by Your grace You told us the end from the beginning. Thank You that You sent Your Son to be born of a virgin and become the full and final atonement for our sin. Thank You that Jesus walked the earth as a Man and understands all the limitations of our humanity. We are so thankful that He fully understands our weaknesses, having been tempted in all things, yet without sin. Thank You for our precious Saviour Who helps us in our trials and temptations and Who is coming back one day to finalise His authority over sin, the world, and the devil. To Him be all the glory, world without end, AMEN.
