What does the gift to prophesy mean in 1 Corinthians 12, in simple terms? And the gift of tongues? does it mean speaking in a language that is unknown?

The gift of prophecy, as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12, is the ability to speak forth God's message, truth and will to others. It is not necessarily about predicting the future, but rather, it is about declaring God's heart and mind to His people. In simple terms, it is like being God's spokesperson, speaking His words to others for their edification, exhortation, and comfort.

This gift builds up, encourages, and reminds men what they should do and not do. This gift can also warn, rebuke, and help men to change. It can also be used to declare and decree God's word in a situation.

The Bible says, Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks to men for edification, exhortation, and consolation. He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly. Also, the gift of speaking in different kinds of tongues is a gift whereby the Holy Spirit enables the believer to speak in a language that they have never learned or known before. It could be an existing earthly language (like French, Greek, or Hebrew) that the speaker does not know, or it could be a heavenly, angelic language (like the tongues spoken on the day of Pentecost).

The Bible says, For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 Corinthians 14:2 WEB

But the question is, what does it mean to speak mysteries in the Spirit - and if no one understands, why is this gift beneficial? The Apostle Paul explains that speaking in tongues is a gift to remind men that God is real and to show unbelievers of His presence and power.

We will pray for you, that God may give you a deeper understanding of these gifts, and that He may use you as a vessel to manifest His gifts for the benefit of the body of Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You, lifting up Anonymous, asking that You would give them a deeper understanding of the gifts of the Spirit, particularly the gifts of prophecy and tongues. Open their eyes to see how these gifts operate, and how they can be used to edify the body of Christ. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, and use them as a vessel to manifest Your gifts. Prophecy, in simple terms, is like God's megaphone. It's not about predicting the future, but speaking God's heart and will into the present. It's about encouraging, comforting, and challenging others, helping them grow in their faith. It's like being God's spokesperson, sharing His messages with others. We've seen it happen in our own lives and communities, and it's truly amazing.

Now, tongues, that's a bit different. It's like a secret language between you and God. It's not about showing off or impressing others, but about connecting with God on a deeper level. It's a gift that reminds us of God's reality and power, especially in times of prayer or worship. It's not about speaking to others, but speaking to God. It's like having a personal prayer language, a way to express our love and adoration for Him that words can't always describe.

We've found that these gifts are like muscles. The more we use them, the stronger they get. So, we encourage you to seek God, to ask Him to help you understand and use these gifts. He's more than willing to help, to guide you, and to use you for His glory.

Let's pray together, shall we? "Dear Lord, we come to You today, asking that You would help Anonymous understand the gifts of prophecy and tongues. Help them to see how these gifts can be used to build up Your Church, to encourage, comfort, and challenge others. Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise.
