Open Thou o Lord our mouth to praise Your name wherever we are. Let our life be a shining light in a dark world. Use each one of us to do Thy will above anything else in this world.
Psalm 51 is one of my favourite scriptures. It invites a radical renewal from God. It is based on the incident recorded in 2 Sammuel Chapter 11-12.This confession is a model for repentance in Judiasm as well as Christianity. In this Psalm dsvid accepted his guilt. Here we see him begging for forgiveness, cleansing snd restoration..He begged not only for a clean heart but also for s renewed spirit. He also asked God to allow the Holy Spirit to remmain with him.
It is clear that he was under condemnation. and and realizes that he had fallen from grace.,He had sinned against man and God. which remainds me of the statement when the Prophet said."woe is me" This further suggests to me that David was convicted by his conscience and that he no longer felt the joy of livinging uprightly.
David repented becaused hewas derermined to maintain a right relationship and fellowship with his maker .This is seen when he cried out for God to restore unto him the joy of his salvation. He asked for God to purge him which suggest deep cleansing..The word " purge " means to rid one of unwanted quality, condition or feeling..In today's terminology it could mean a laxative which is used for internal cleansing. David called to be purged with hyssop.
In the Bible hyssop was a wild shrub whose twigs were used for sprinkling in ancient rites of purification.David wanted to be clean internally as well as externally. This is an excellent posture for us to imitate or adopt as christians.whenever we recognize that we have done wrong .In The Beattitude in St Matthew 5 v5 tell
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
14 Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
Psalm 51 is one of my favourite scriptures. It is based on the incident recorded in 2 Samuel chapter 11-12.Thid confession by David is a model for repentance in Judaism as well as in Christianity. In this Psalm David was begging for mercy cleansing and restoration. He begged not only for a clean heart but also for a renewed spirit. He asked God for the Holy Spirit to remain with him. David confessed his sins and also repented because he was determine to maintain fellowship with God. He said "Restore unto me the joy of my salvation".
David asked God to purge him. In other words to purge him of any unwanted quality, condition or feeling.purging could also be a laxative which is used for internal cleansing. David mentioned the word hyssop. In the Bible hyssop was a wild shrub whose twigs were used for sprinkling in ancient rites of purification. So it is clear that David wanted to be clean externally and internally. He had defiled his body .He had sin against God and man.David humbled himself and cried."Create in me a clean heart oh God.This is what God requires from us.In the Beattitudes Jesus said blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see.God.(Matt 5 v 8)
