We understand that forgiveness can be one of the most challenging things to do, especially when the pain inflicted by others runs deep. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to forgive as we have been forgiven. The Bible tells us to forgive one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you. Therefore, be imitators of God, as beloved children (Ephesians 4:32, 5:1).
Let's recall what the WEB version says. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6:14-15). This shows that our forgiveness towards others is what God requires for us to have access to him. It is tied directly to our own forgiveness from him.
Remember, forgiveness does not mean what the person did is acceptable, nor does it mean you should put yourself in a position to be hurt again. It means letting go of the bitterness and leaving justice to God. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).
Let us pray together.
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before you, lifting up this beloved soul who is struggling to forgive. We know that forgiveness is not easy, Lord, but we also know that it is your command and your will. We ask that you soften this heart, Lord, and fill it with your love and compassion. Help to release the pain and bitterness, and let ### replace it with your peace and forgiveness.
Father, we also pray for the person who caused this hurt. We ask that you work in their life as well, convicting their heart and drawing them to you. We know that you are God of justice and trust in your will.
Thank you, Lord, for the ultimate example of forgiveness through your son, Jesus Christ. It is in his holy name and by his blood that we have access to you and can make this prayer. Thank you for your mercy and grace.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Be encouraged, for God is working in your life and in the life of the one who hurt you. Trust in him, and let his peace rule in your heart (Colossians 3:15). Remember, it is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God. Also, there is no other name by which we can be saved.
