We have been together for ### years, and bonded over coming from alcoholic families, determined to not repeat the cycle with our child. Yet, he has cycled back and fourth with drinking and depression the last ### years. He went into rehab once, but started drinking ### months later. Has not had daughters outside help since then. He is a great dad when not depressed or drinking, but I never know when that will be. My son loves this man, but I struggle to emotionally count on him, as well as to release resentment after all the times he’s promised he’s done drinking… or told me he’d be done if I could just believe it. Our son is ### and smart enough to know something isn’t right. I can’t keep my poker face of happy-go-lucky anymore. I am depressed now too. I just want a stable family for my boy. Some days, I wish I could just leave, though my job on its own is not enough to financially support my son and I. Not to mention, cutting my fiancée out would leave a hole in my son’s heart. Fiancée has started that if we’re not together as a couple, he won’t be around at all. Y'all, I want to have faith. I want to have compassion. But it is gone. To the point where I want to hit my fiancée as he is drunk and loud in my face… he doesn’t abuse us or break things… just gets loud, interrupts our daily activities, and behaves irrationally. Please pray this man seeks help beyond himself. Please pray I can create security for my son, and somehow, find it for myself. And pray that my son is protected from the negativity of this cycle. All three of us believe and know that God has been so good, but I need to continue being ABLE to see his goodness through this lonely time. Thank you.

We understand that you are facing a tremendously challenging situation, Shoalarsin. Let us first address the most important aspect. We are praying this in Jesus' name. It is only through Him that we have access to the Father, and it is only through His name that we can be saved.

As you navigated through this difficult journey, your hope and faith should be in Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 2:8-9, the Bible says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9 WEB) It is by having a relationship with Jesus Christ that we can have hope, peace and eternal life. The bible says in Romans 10:9, ""that if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9 WEB).

First, we want to acknowledge your fiancé's positive qualities. He is a great dad. He does not abuse you or your child. He desires to stop drinking but is stuck in a cycle that seems to have no end. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God," (Romans 3:23 WEB) and it also says in Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23 WEB). It is by knowing that we are all sinners that we can come to Him to receive eternal life.

The cycle of alcoholism and depression that your fiancé is experiencing is a form of bondage, and it is not God's will for him or for your family. The Bible tells us, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not let your freedom become an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants of one another." (Galatians 5:13 WEB)

We pray that your fiancé will seek God's help and deliverance from this bondage. The Bible says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7 WEB) We pray that he will turn to Jesus Christ and find the strength and support he needs to overcome these struggles.

However, we must also address the fact that you and your fiancé have been together for seven years and have a child together, but there is no mention of marriage. The Bible teaches us that marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, and it is the foundation for a stable family life. In Genesis 2:24, it says, "Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh." (Genesis 2:24 WEB)

We encourage you to consider the importance of marriage and the stability it can bring to your family. We pray that you and your fiancé will seek God's will for your relationship and that He will guide you towards a godly marriage if that is His will.

We also pray for your emotional well-being and your son's protection. The Bible tells us, "Don't be anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." (Philippians 4:6 WEB) We pray that God will fill you with His peace and that He will provide for all your needs, both emotional and financial.

Lastly, we want to address the resentment and anger you feel towards your fiancé. The Bible tells us, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32 WEB) We encourage you to forgive your fiancé and release the resentment you feel. This does not mean that you should tolerate his behavior or that you should not set boundaries, but it does mean that you should let go of the anger and bitterness you feel.

We are praying for you and your family, Shoalarsin. We ask God that Jesus Christ will become the center of your lives, that He will bring healing, deliverance, guidance, provision, peace, and love to your family.
