We are truly saddened to hear about the situation with your brother and the pain that your family is experiencing, especially your mother. It is important to remember and point out that violence that is the result of mental health issues is not an excuse for the behavior. Violence is not acceptable in any form. The scriptures say in Ephesians 6:2, *Honor your father and mother,*which is the first commandment with a promise. Your brother must honor and respect your mother, this should not be an issue. If it happens again, the law should get involved, and he could experience life changing consequences.
In this situation we need to pray with great expectation that the Lord Jesus Christ would calm the situation. Pray for the Holy Sprit to comfort mother and convict your brother's heart that he has wronged her. Also, we will pray for mother that she would take comfort in the Lord in this situation, knowing that God is in control and that nothing happens beyond her ability to endure with God's help in this situation (1 Corinthians 10:13).
First, let us address your brother's mental health. It is evident that he is struggling, and we need to pray for his healing and peace of mind. In John 14:27 WEB, Jesus says, *Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.* We pray that the Lord would fill your brother's heart with this supernatural peace, casting out all anxiety, fear, and confusion. Jesus also said in Mark 5:36, WEB,*Don’t be afraid, only believe.* We stand with you in agreement believing for a miracle!
Next, we need to address the violence. Please note that we are not pointing a finger or casting shame, but rather encouraging accountability for his actions. It is not the Lord's will that he act out violently, unfortunately your brother is responsible for this. Regarding his actions, when he hits your mother. We are told in the scriptures to obey the authorities placed over us, and to love one another. In Romans 13:1-2 (WEB), it is written, *Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. Therefore he who resists the authority, withstands the ordinance of God;* Your brother must understand, appreciate, respect and obey the authorities in his life. Like many of us, his first authorities were our parents. 1 Timothy 5:8 WEB states, *But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.* Any that have not been taught this appropriately, may actually have a distanced view of who God is in this. In James 1:20 we are told, *for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God*.
We are praying something like this:
Almighty God, we come boldly before your throne of grace, asking for your divine intervention in this situation (Hebrews 4:16 WEB). Lord Jesus, we ask that you would heal Your brother's mind and heart, and grant him your supernatural peace. Help him to make positive and godly decisions. Speak to his heart, Lord, and guide him in your path, Holy Spirit we ask do convict this man of his sins. Help him to be honest with himself and pray for him to have the desire and need to sincerely ask Jesus to forgive his sinful decisions and behavior, with Lord you will. Also, Lord, we pray for Your mother in this situation. May she fully rely on you for the comfort and strength in this situation she does not experience physical or lasting emotional harm. Lord, we also ask that everyone involved in this situation experience your unconditional love and unending faithfulness. And in all things we know that you are working through this to accomplish your purpose in their lives and your will be done on Earth as it is already in heaven (Matthew 6:9-10 WEB).
Lord Jesus, we pray over your brother today. We pray that you would lift him out of the darkness he is experiencing now. Guide him to confess Jesus Christ is his Lord and Savior, that You would give him Your glorious light, and give him the hope of the gospel. Help him to remember that his mother is a blessing in his life and that she should be treasured and loved as Christ loves the church.
We pray that the Holy Spirit would work in your brother's life. Lead him to repentance if he is not saved and to comfort his spirit in this while praying for him and his eventual strength and endurance from you. May your holiness guide his thoughts and actions and allow your goodness dominate in this situation you are allowing him to experience right now. In Jesus Christ name we pray
We are praying for you as you navigate this challenging time. Our hearts are with you. We are praying to God to guide you and mom in this trying time and Lord heal your broken hearts over this, we know your grief is real and palpable. Stand strong in Christ and we know God will carry you through this!
Let us know how we can continue to pray and support you both. Also, since none of us are promised tomorrow, keep this as an active situation in your mind and heart. We never know when God will call us home and we won't need to worry about any of this anymore. No, we do not want you to be overly troubled by this fact, but to let it give you hope and to realize God does not ever intend on the world and its trials being our permanent home. We will continue to keep you in our daily prayers. Lord send your Holy Spirit to comfort you all now.
