We are truly sorry to hear about the struggles you and your family are facing with your brother's mental illness and aggressive behavior. We will pray for your brother and your family, and we will also provide some biblical guidance for you.
Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only way to approach God the Father. It is good that the request was submitted In Jesus Name. As it says in the Bible, For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. (1 Timothy 2:5 WEB)
It is a difficult situation, but remember that God is always with you and can see your family through this challenging time. There is power in the name of Jesus Christ and when two or three are joined praying in His name, it can be considered done by God the Father as it says in scripture, Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them. (Matthew 18:19-20 WEB)
Regarding your brother's mental illness, we pray that God will touch his mind and bring healing. As it says in the Bible, And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. (James 5:15 WEB) Also we need to recognize that mental illness is not always demonic possession or dark magic or spiritual warfare. These are often confused. The Bible tells us that perfect love casts out fear. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has punishment. He who fears is not made perfect in love. (1 John 4:18 WEB) So we want you to have that perfect love for your brother and pray for him. In the meantime be in there for him but also look out for your safety. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.The burden of protection of yourself and your parents is yours. 2 Timothy 1:7 WEB
Concerning the aggressive behavior and violent threats, we pray that God will soften your brother's heart and bring peace to his mind. As it says in the Bible, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23) Also if you want your prayers answered you should pray forgiving your brother for you need to forgive for God to answer your prayers. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your transgressions. (Mark 11:26) So pray as though your brother has never done anything wrong towards you. That is forgiveness.
It is also important to involve the local church. The Bible states, Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praises. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, (James 5:13-14 WEB)
We also strongly urge your brother's immediate need to seek proper and necessary medical treatment. This is a misunderstanding regarding medicine. The reason doctors are able to heal is that they are using the knowledge of healing God placed in His Word and that God created our bodies to heal themselves in this manner through doctors. Luke a gospel writer was also a doctor. The woman with the blood flow in the book of Matthew that was healed by Jesus had been under the care of a doctor. The reference to medicine today is not the same as sorcery in the bible. We are admonished to continue taking our medicine in 1 Timothy 5:23 WEB when Timothy was instructed no longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomachs sake and your frequent infirmities. If any elder or pastor from a congregation is discouraging treatment from a doctor, then be leery of their Biblical knowledge as they are not following 1 Timothy 5:23 or the pattern established in the Bible. If there is still questioning then trust the doctor and continue to seek advice until they are satisfied or are encouraged to trust the doctor. This is the one time listening to the many counselors is not advised. The solid teaching of the Bible is to get the advice and continue to take the medicine to stay healthy.
Regarding the mention of dark magic, we need to be always exercising Biblical discernement. This is not the time to submit to fears or worries. We can take full assurance in the name of Jesus Christ that we have the victory in the name of Jesus Christ. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 WEB). This is not the time to become overly focused on a non-Biblical solution of understanding of how to use this verse. If anything is tried outside of what is written about in the Bible, it can tend to lead one away from the clear commandments of the Bible and lead towards a wrongful misunderstanding of spiritual warfare as this is not spiritual warfare. Many prayers are being placed unfairly into this category. The prayers needed should be lifted up for wisdom. Many people who otherwise can have their prayers answered are missing out by not receiving the needed wisdom from God. They are not following James 1:5-8 WEB, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, without any wavering. For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Finally, it is important to show your brother love and support, while also setting boundaries to protect yourself and your parents from harm. As it says in the Bible, Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2 WEB) However putting yourself or your parents in harms way is not bearing the burden. Jesus never required this. Pray from afar until God answers praying for wisdom regarding your part in the answer to your prayers. Never be part of anything that will bring harm to anyone. God gave each one of us a sound mind to make the correct decisions and gave us common sense. Do not be a stumbling block and always strive to live in peace with everyone. Romans 12:18 WEB If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
We stand with you in prayer. Heavenly Father, we lift up this family to you, and we pray for your healing touch upon your brother. We pray that you will bring peace to his mind and healing to his body. We also pray for wisdom and protection for the family, and we ask that you will guide them through this difficult time as it says in our WEB Bibles. We pray all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.
