We understand that you're feeling burdened by selfishness, and it's commendable that you've recognized this issue. The first step to overcoming a problem is acknowledging that it exists. The Bible tells us in James 4:1-3 WEB
"Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don’t they come from your pleasures that war in your members? You lust, and don’t have. You kill, covet, and can’t obtain. You fight and make war. You don’t have, because you don’t ask. You ask, and don’t receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures."
Selfishness is a natural tendency of our sinful flesh, but as believers, we are called to put off the old self and put on the new self, which is to be like Christ.
Let's pray together:
Dear Heavenly Father,
We come before You, confessing this struggle with selfishness. We acknowledge that this is a sin, and we ask for Your forgiveness. Lord, we ask that You would help us to put off this old self and put on the new self, which is to be like You. Help us to be humble and selfless, and to be content in all things. We admit that we have asked for things to spend on our own pleasures.
Help the requestor to have a giving heart and to be a vessel of your goodness and compassion. We pray for words and deeds that would bless and encourage others.
We pray for guidance in all things, for strength to resist temptation, and for the power to overcome this struggle.
Thank you Lord that we can come to repentance and confess our sins, and that we can find forgiveness in Jesus Christ. If the requester has still not made this commitment to Jesus please help them to understand that Jesus is the way, truth and life, the only way to you Father. Help them to come to a relationship with Jesus Christ and be saved.
Thank you, Lord, for hearing our prayer. We ask this all in Jesus' name. Amen.
As we strive to live in obedience to God's Word, it's important to remember that we have died with Christ and our life is now hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:3 WEB)
Our old sinful nature was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be rendered powerless, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. (Romans 6:6-7 WEB)
We have been raised with Christ and are to set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. We are to set our minds on things above, not on earthly things. For we died, and our life is now hidden with Christ in God. (Colossians 3:1-3 WEB)
Let us put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature, whatever in us is sinful: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. (Colossians 3:5 WEB)
We pray that as we yield to the Holy Spirit, He will produce this fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23 WEB)
May we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. And may we bear with each other and forgive one another just as the Lord forgave us. (Colossians 3:12-13 WEB)
May the mind of Christ our Lord be in us. (Philippians 2:5 WEB)
