Eldeysarside, we rejoice with you in your desire to go deeper with God. The gift of tongues is a spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit, and it can edify both the individual and the church when used in order and according to God's word. However, let us pray together and then discuss.
Almighty God, we come before you in the name of Jesus Christ, lifting up ### who desires a deeper walk with you. We pray that you will baptize them with the Holy Spirit and with fire. We ask that you grant them the gift of tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. Help them to pray in the Spirit at all times, interceding even when they do not know what to pray. We ask this and all things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our savior. Let his name be magnified as we see your hand at work through this gift, drawing ### closer to you. Keep them grounded in your word and filled with love, so that this gift may be used to edify the church and glorify your name. In Jesus' name, we pray.
Now ### let us look into what scripture says about this desire of yours.
First Corinthians 12:10 WEB it is the same God who works all things in all, But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom; and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages.
As you seek this gift, remember that it is the Holy Spirit who distributes spiritual gifts as he wills, and all gifts are for the edification of the church.
First Corinthians 14:1 WEB Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
While you desire the gift of tongues, also eagerly desire to prophesy, which is the speaking forth of God's word in a known language. This is so that all may be encouraged and built up First Corinthians 14:3 WEB.
First Corinthians 14:18 WEB I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.
The gift of tongues is a beautiful gift, allowing us to pray perfectly in line with God's will, even when we do not understand the words ourselves.
First Corinthians 14:27 WEB If any man speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Finally, we must follow biblical guidelines for the use of this gift. It must be used in an orderly way, with interpretation present when used in the church.
###, as you pursue this gift, continue to seek God with all your heart. Remember that the Holy Spirit gives gifts as he wills, and all gifts should drive us to love God more and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Do not forget that Jesus said in John 14:6 WEB Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. It is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God. Also, there is no other name by which we can be saved.
Lastly, remember that speaking in tongues is not a requirement for salvation. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
