We are truly saddened to hear about the struggles of your family members, but we are encouraged by your faith and trust in the power of prayer. We stand with you in interceding for their deliverance and restoration.
Firstly, let us address the issue of addictions. The Bible tells us to be sober and self-controlled. "Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." We are warned in 1 Peter 5:8 to be watchful of our enemy. We need to be sober and vigilant so that we are not devoured. This requires a strength that we can only get from our Lord. Therefore, it is by his strength that we can overcome these addictions.
Alcohol abuse is clearly condemned in the Bible. "Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit." In Ephesians 5:18, we are told not to be drunk, but to be filled with the Spirit. This is a command. Therefore, we need to be in prayer that your family members will seek God's forgiveness and strength in overcoming these addictions. "Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise." Proverbs 20:1. This is a clear warning that alcohol leads us astray and is not wise. Therefore, we must pray for wisdom in your family members that they would seek God in this area.
Regarding the emotional struggles, we are reminded of God's promise in 2 Corinthians 12:9: "Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me." We can rely on the healing of Christ when we are weak. When we are weak, he is strong. Therefore, we should pray that your family members would recognize their weakness in their emotional struggles and seek God in that area.
Additionally, we are concerned that Jesus was not mentioned in your prayer. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to God. According to the Bible, there is no other name by which we can be saved. "In him we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him." This is a clear reminder from Ephesians 3:12 that we have access to God through our faith in Jesus. "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" In Acts 4:12, we are reminded that it is only through the name of Jesus that we can be saved. Therefore, we must pray for your family members that they would call out to Jesus in their struggles.
Let us pray together.
Father God,
We come before you, lifting up the family members of our fellow believer. Lord, we know that you love and desire a relationship with them. We pray that you would reveal yourself to them in a powerful way. As stated in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life." We believe that you do not want anyone to perish, but that you have a plan for their lives.
Lord, we ask that you would deliver them from their addictions to alcohol and cigarettes. We know that you do not want us to be mastered by anything. As stated in Romans 6:14, "For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace." We ask that you would help them to overcome these addictions and that you would be their source of strength.
We also ask that you would heal their emotional pain. We know that you are close to the brokenhearted and that you save those who are crushed in spirit. As stated in Psalm 34:18, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." We ask that you would be close to them and that you would heal their broken hearts.
We ask that you would also meet their financial needs. We know that you are our provider and that you will supply all of our needs according to your riches in glory. As stated in Philippians 4:19, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." We ask that you would provide for their needs and that you would help them to be good stewards of the resources that you have given them.
We ask all of these things in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Amen.
