Dear Lord,
I'm so amazed at the endless # of miracles you've wrought in my life, + profoundly thankful. After 8 years of dialysis, I was circling the drain, + at that time, my daughter was only 13. I was desperate to raise her to adulthood. A man from church felt led to give me one of his kidneys, + he only knew me from being on a committee together. Then, when this first transplant was failing 9 years later, another one came available that was a perfect match, which happens only once in every 100,000 in the general population. That kidney is doing fairly well after 6 1/2 years.
I pray this 2nd kidney works well for a long time. The average lifespan of a cadaver transplant is 10-15 years, but some last fewer years. This kidney came from someone over 60 who had had a fatal stroke. You never know how long they'll last; it's a bit like having a ticking time bomb in your body, but not knowing when the timer is set to go off.
Anyway, I know I should have died numerous times over the years d/t one catastrophic problem or another. I have no idea why you kept me alive so long; as an RN, I know the odds against my survival are astronomical. May I always praise + thank you.
Needless to say, there are many chronic health problems that go along with all the illnesses + surgeries this body has endured. I esp. ask for protection of my cognitive function; kidney function; neuromuscular health; cardiovascular function; balance, strength + the already limited dexterity; bone + joint health; etc. I want to remain independent into my old age.
Guide me on how best to continue to serve you. May I shine your light when others approach + may I be a help to them.
In your holy name, amen.
