Let's bring this situation to the Lord in prayer, while also considering what the Bible says about caring for the needy and the role of government.
Firstly, we should pray for our President and leaders. We are instructed in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 WEB, "I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence." We should pray that God softens their hearts and guides their decisions, especially when it comes to caring for the vulnerable.
We should also remember what the Bible says about caring for the poor, disabled, and homeless. Proverbs 14:31 WEB tells us, "He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God." And in Matthew 25:40 WEB, Jesus says, "As much as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me."
Regarding work and assistance, 2 Thessalonians 3:10 WEB says, "For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: 'If anyone is not willing to work, don't let him eat.'" However, this does not apply to those who genuinely cannot work due to disability or lack of available jobs.
It's important to note that the Bible does not prescribe a specific role for government in caring for the needy; it places that responsibility on individuals and the community of believers. The early church, as described in Acts 4:34-35 WEB, is a beautiful example of this: "For neither was there among them any who lacked, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles' feet, and distribution was made to each, according as anyone had need."
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, asking for guidance and wisdom for our President and all leaders. Soften their hearts and help them make decisions that honor You and care for the needy. Help us, as a nation and as individuals, to be compassionate and generous towards the poor, disabled, and homeless. In Jesus' name, we pray.
