Physical evidence won't sway the stubborn
A Pharisee named Nicodemus approached Jesus during the night and said to Him that he was certain that Jesus came from God because no other man could do the signs that Jesus did. What exactly were those signs that Nicodemus was referring to?
Over centuries, time can erase some cultural practices, or at the very least, conceal some facts. That is the case with the Messianic Miracles. There were four miracles that only the coming Messiah could accomplish. The people of the period were aware of these miracles and were looking for these four signs.
1. Heal the blind (Matthew 9:27),
2. Heal the lame (Matthew 9:6),
3. Heal the leper (Matthew 8:2),
4. Heal the dead (Matthew 9:25).
These four miracles are known in Hebrew and Judaism as ‘nessim v’niflaot’
The religious authorities would used this special category of miracles to evaluate possible messianic candidates.
Several of John the Baptist's disciples were sent out to see if Jesus was indeed the Messiah.
Jesus answered the pair by quoting old prophetic scriptures and revealing the quality of miracles He had already performed.
Matthew 11:5
..."The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor."
- Basic English Bible
At the time of this visit, Jesus' had already accomplished the special works, as recorded in Matthew.
In John 15:24, Jesus says;
If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father.
Truly these great works could only have been accomplished by the Messiah Himself but still the people of the day did not believe. Even some Pharisees knew but were powerless to change the outcome.
Physical evidence won't sway the stubborn but spiritual faith can move moutains.
Help us Lord to increase our Faith!
