A new report, "Killing in the Name of God. State-Sanctioned Violations of Religious Freedom," shows the reality faced by millions of believers around the world: Following Jesus can mean death.
But we don't have to be hopeless - we can stand with our brothers and sisters in prayer.
In 2020, some 12 countries had the death sentence for those found guilty of blasphemy or apostacy. Many of these nations are included on the 2021 Open Door's World Watch List of the 50 countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Christians in these places can face immediate danger if they're convicted of blasphemy, or if they convert from the dominant religion to follow Jesus.
The report notes governments make use of other means to silence religious offenders. These include direct killings by security forces in Nigeria and Yemen, for example, as well as deaths in custody and enforced disappearances.
The report also talks about non-government murders over religious differences. Mob killings and assassinations of anyone "sympathetic" with an accused blasphemer, along with attacks from extremist groups, all affect religious minorites in these places. It's these "non-state actors" who are responsible for most religiously motivated killings, often with the unspoken support of the state, said the report.
Countries may also charge believers with treason or state security-related infractions to hide the reality of what is being done.
Let's pray for Christians following Jesus in places where it could cost them their lives.
Please pray with those who live in countries where their beliefs are not only not accepted, but can be used to imprison or eliminate them entirely.
Ask God to bring the light of truth to killings that take place in legal darkness, hiding them from international scrunity.
Pray for believers who fear their own governments will not uphold their legal rights if they are charged with other "crimes", just for following Jesus.
Pray for the people who inflict these punishments on Christians to be convicted by the Holy Spirit and drawn to the truth of the gospel despite their training and past actions.
Thanks so much for praying for our worldwide brothers and sisters who pay a heavy cost to follow our Lord Jesus. God bless. Taken from an Open Doors USA text alert,
