"We have already warned her to return to Hmong belief, but she did not listen to our warning."
This was the response from the authorities when 40 year old widow Foom's pastor filed a complaint on her behalf after a neighbor hit her with his motorcycle on her way home from church.
This wasn't the first attack either. In 2019, just days after she became a Christian, the same neighbor beat her with a stick.
Foom's pastor shares that local authorities have spread the word in their village, "If anyone converts to Christianity, they will suffer an accident like Foom. If they no longer worship the gods of the Hmong people, they will be punished, and God could not rescue them."
Because of this, people are afraid to leave their animistic religion and follow Jesus.
With the help of local Open Doors partners, Foom was able to have surgery for the spinal injury she suffered when she was hit by the motorcyle. Her church family is taking turns to care for her and her four children as she recovers in the hospital.
"Her family is special to our church because she is a widow with four children. Because of poverty, her daily life is full of burden, but she is faithful in the Lord, even as she faced persecution in these past years," the pastor shares.
Our partners ask us to pray with them:
Praise God for the progress Foom is showing after her surgery! Before the operation, she was paralayzed and couldn't move without the assistance of others. Pray for a continuous and speedy recovery.
Pray the local authorities will bring Foom's attacker to justice and that he and the local authorities will have a change of heart.
Pray Foom continues to hold on to her faith, no matter the consequences.
Pray for provision for Foom's children. Long before the incident, her children had to stop going to school as she could not afford it.
