We have an urgent request from our brothers and sisters in Sudan. The military has arrested the Prime Minister and other leaders in the government and suspended certain aspects of the constitution. The military is doing this to grab hold of power, according to an Open Doors source in Sudan.
The Associated Press reports that the arrests came "after weeks of rising tensions between Sudan's civilian and military leaders. A failed coup attempt in September fractured the country along old lines, pitting more conservative Islamists who want a military government against those who toppled the previous dictator Hassan al Bashir more than two years ago in mass protests."
A local source, who must remain nameless for his own protection, said not only are national officials being arrested, but the government has been dissolved, as are alll city governments so even city officials can be replaced with military leaders.
"The banks have stopped work. Even doctors have stopped going to hospitals for anything but critical needs, because they refuse what is happening in the country," he said. Nothing is open in the markets, either. The Internet is inaccessible and the phone system is down, likely to limit the free flow of information and news coverage.
Open Doors director for the work in East Africa, Yasin A, says - "The news is very disturbing. We call on Christians around the world to join us in praying for Sudan at this time. The country has come a long way since former dictator Hassan al Bashir's rule was ended. The rise of a military takeover will be a step backward with potentially grave consequences for the church/"
Our local source pleads: "Just pray for Sudan. Pray for the coming hours. We hope some changes will happen in a peaceful way, and that God will intervene in this situation, without any bloodshed."
Please pray with the people of Sudan in this hour of great uncertainity.
Ask God to bring about a peaceful end to the takeover by the military, and to prevent violence as this situation unfolds.
Pray for the Christians in Sudan who fear the return of the military may mean the return of greater restrictions and persecution. Ask God to bring more moderate leaders to the foreground
Pray for the people of Sudan who are suddenly cut off from banking, markets and communications. Ask Him to pour calm on the situation and enable the country to pull together for a better future for all.
Thanks so much for praying, taken from Open Doors USA text alert
