Discarded sandals lay strewn on the grounds of Bethel Baptist High School in Kaduna state, Nigeria this past Monday. One hundred and forty students were kidnapped, and no one is sure where they are. Only 25 students and a teacher escaped the kidnapping, and authorities have no idea where the children have been taken.
This is at least the fourth mass school kidnapping in Kaduna state this year. More than 1,000 students have been taken in abductions across northern Nigeria since December and 9 have been killed. More than 200 students are still missing, some of them as young as 3. There are many theories about the motives for the kidnappings - most people suspect the financial benefits of ransoms are inspiring many of the abductions, though there are some suspicions the kidnappers have ties to islamic militants.
John Evans was one of dozens of heartbroken parents who gathered at Bethlehem Baptist High School immediately after the abductions. He had recently told his daughter that God would protect her while she studied at the school. "Just this morning I received a phone call that people entered the school and our children are all taken, including my daughter," he said, his voice breaking.
The gunmen opened fire and overpowered security guards at the school. Simultaneously, others attacked the police station to keep officers from interfering in the kidnappings. Hours before the attack on the school, they also snatched a nurse's one year old child and seven other people at a health centre.
Open Doors has called on the government of Nigeria to ensure the respect and protection of the right to education of Nigerian children by urgently acting to restore security to schools in northern Nigeria through laying out a comprehensive plan that will ensure children's safe return to school. provide support to the victims of abductions and their families. investigate the attacks and hold those responsible to account.
Please pray with the people of Nigeria for the swift and safe return of their children and a stop to abductions.
Ask God to protect the students and make a way for them to return home quickly.
Pray the students have the spiritual strength to stand against their kidnappers, showing the Spirit of Christ in this extremely frightening circumstance.
Ask for comfort for the families and diligence among officials as the search for the children goes on.
Thank you so much for praying for our persecuted brethren like the Bible commands us to in Hebrews 13.3 . God bless. Info from Open Doors USA text alert.
