When you grow up in a war zone, it can be impossible to know peace and security - and it can be hard to even know what God's peace might look like. Young people in Syria have never known a time without constant war, displacement and upheaval. Many teens and young adults feel intense despair as they try to envision their future. Depression overtakes even Christian young men and women.
Sadly, a Christian young man, age 22 recently committed suicide in Qamishli. He was a senior in college. He wasn't able to bear the pressures of life, the economic difficulties and the political situation in his city. His sad story shows how much Syrian believers need our prayers for the peace and love of Jesus to fill their hearts and minds.
But God is still at work in Syria, of course. Ghazal Mattar, a 12 year old girl, believes in the power of prayer. She asked God to take care of her grandmother, who has diabetes and was in danger of leg amputation. "I prayed to God to save her leg, and the doctor told us that she doesn.t need amputation after that. Jesus heard my prayer," she said.
As God shows Himself to be real and powerful in the lives of Syrian young people please pray the assurance He gave to Gazal would penetrate even the most difficult places in Syria.
Please pray for the young people who are in despair over their nation and the persecution they face there. Ask God to lift their eyes to Him, and receive His encouragement.
Pray for Ghazal and her grandmother, that their example of faith would be a witness to God's goodness and hope in Syria.
Pray for Open Doors partners in Syria, as they seek to strengthen the church to be beacons of light and life in a place that has known so much darkness.
Thank you so much for praying, God bless. from an Open Doors USA text alert.
